About The Position

The City of Alexandria is seeking a Temporary Recreation Leader I - Youth Basketball Official for the Recreation Services Sports Division. This role is responsible for assisting with officiating the department's Youth Basketball League for ages seven and eight. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of basketball, a passion for community work, and strong communication and customer service skills. The City of Alexandria is an independent city in Northern Virginia, part of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, known for its historic charm and urban living appeal. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) aims to enrich the City by creating meaningful experiences through public spaces, cultural activities, and programming, with a vision to improve community well-being by connecting residents to each other and their environment.

Requirements

Must be a high school student in good standing.
Some experience participating or leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, physical fitness, mindfulness, swimming and water play activities, STEAM activities, and field trips, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledgeable about basketball.
Passionate about working in the community.
Possess effective communication and excellent customer service skills.
Successful completion of a criminal records background check prior to employment.

Responsibilities

Develop positive relationships with players, coaches, parents, and staff.
Demonstrate ability to officiate athletic contests in a fair and impartial manner.
Gain experience in the sports management field.
Maintain continuous watch of participants to prevent injury and minimize or eliminate an emergency.
Observes and enforces facility rules and regulations.
Assists with the set-up and break-down of athletic contests.
Function effectively as a team member.
Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
Perform related work as required.
