About The Position

The online Master's in Data Science is a 36-credit program housed within the Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment Department at the Lynch School of Education and Human Development. In line with the Jesuit values at the core of Boston College, the program ensures graduates (a) approach data science with a human-centered mindset, which will prepare graduates to place people and society at the forefront; (b) instill in students the importance of ethical and responsible data use; and (c) ensure that equity and the minimization of biases are at the center of their training in data science, from data collection, processing, storage, to modeling, presentation, and interpretation. Job Description: The online M.S. in Data Science program at Boston College is seeking Tutors to support our courses during the upcoming semester. This role is expected to average 10- 15 hours per week across the semester, with a maximum of 170 hours. The Tutor role offers valuable experience in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level in a fast-growing program. Tutors play a valued role in our program, supporting our students and faculty with excellence and kindness. Courses requiring Tutors: Summer semester: (beginning of May through mid-Aug) Data Visualization & Storytelling Multivariate Statistical Analysis Natural Language Processing We are also interested in hiring tutors for the following semesters: Fall semester: (mid-August through mid-December) Introduction to Human-Centered Data Science Applied Math for Data Science Database Systems and Data Preparation Applied Machine Learning & AI Spring semester: (beginning of January through mid-May) Python Programming for Data Science General Linear Models Deep Learning & AI The Tutor role will include the following requirements: ● Support your Faculty Instructor in providing feedback and grades for student work ● Be available via email communication with your Faculty Instructor, with responses expected within 1 business day ● Familiarize yourself with all course materials on the course Canvas website ● Attend all course synchronous sessions live. If live attendance is not possible, you must notify the Faculty Instructor ahead of time and watch the recordings promptly. ● Act professionally in all communications with students and with your Faculty Instructor ● Respond to student questions via email (or another designated platform like Slack, depending on the course) within 1 business day ● Alert your Faculty Instructor of any suspicions of academic dishonesty by students ● Keep track of your hours worked and share these logs with your Faculty Instructor In consultation with your Faculty Instructor, your Tutor role may also include the following responsibilities: ● Holding weekly office hours to meet with students (either at a fixed time, by appointment, or both) ● Participating in weekly online meetings with your Faculty Instructor to discuss course content, logistics, and student feedback ● Planning and hosting review sessions for students to reinforce and discuss course materials ● Coordinating a mid-semester survey of student feedback to inform the remainder of the course ● Supporting the Faculty Instructor with keeping the course Canvas site up-to-date (e.g. fixing mistakes, releasing weekly modules, updating deadlines, sending announcements, etc.) ● Helping manage course logistics, e.g. tracking student attendance and participation, assignment deadlines, late assignments, student groups for assignments, student illnesses, etc.

Requirements

  • Strong Python skills are required.
  • Academic background/coursetaking in data science and related fields are required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills are required.
  • Strong communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience in data science, computer science, or statistics are strongly preferred.
  • Work experience in data science or related fields are helpful but not required.
