About The Position

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Laboratory Processing Assistant to join the Receiving team at the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. In this position, you will adhere to a rotational work schedule that is primarily in Receiving. You will be under the general supervision of the laboratory supervisors to support the AHDC operations by performing routine and detailed submission handling duties to prepare cases for testing. The successful candidate is highly collaborative and enjoys completing tasks while using standard operating procedures (SOPs). They are also extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, and work well under pressure in a team-based environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and / or up to one year of relevant work experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to clearly communicate across levels
  • Works well both independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including but not limited to sitting and standing for long periods of time
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback from supervisors and apply it to improve future performance.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in a science related field with experience working in a veterinary or human diagnostic laboratory, medical practice, or health facility
  • Licensed veterinary technician or veterinary assistant

Responsibilities

  • Receive and open sample packages, confirm completeness and accuracy of all incoming samples and submission forms
  • Enter submission information into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and perform any additional paperwork related to the case.
  • Participate in a rotational bench schedule within the Receiving unit.
  • Contact clients concerning any problems and/or discrepancies related to submissions.
  • Receive and process routine submissions delivered.
  • Assist laboratory units with sample related issues.
  • The responsibilities of a Temporary Laboratory Technician may vary depending on the staff member's skill level and the supervisor's discretion.
  • Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.
