About The Position

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. Plant breeding is a critical tool in the fight for food security and responsible environmental stewardship in the 21st century. For more than one hundred years, Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell University has been widely recognized for developing novel breeding methodologies and discovering economically important genes and varieties. As a member of the Virginia Moore Lab, you will provide routine technical field, greenhouse, and lab support, including experiments related to forage, cover crop, dry bean, and hemp breeding. You will also help with core research activities, including planting, data collection, and harvesting .

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 1 year of relevant experience in a laboratory setting, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite – including Word, PowerPoint and Excel and familiarity with Outlook.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with faculty, staff and students.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Plant Science or Agriculture-related fields.
  • Prior experience in a farm or greenhouse setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with field preparation, planting, and management of field experiments.
  • Collecting data in field and lab experiments.
  • Assisting in the daily care for plants and experimental samples.
  • Performing data entry using basic computer techniques and software.
