About The Position

WVU Jackson's Mill is seeking a Temporary Adventure Guide for the summer camping season, from mid-May to mid-August. This seasonal role involves assisting the Program Coordinator of Outdoor Education and Recreation with various outdoor programs for camps and groups. Adventure Guides will also provide overnight supervision for campers in cabins, requiring them to undergo the Children on Campus vetting process, including Title IX and Child Protection training, and a background check. A mandatory, in-person training in mid-May will cover all necessary job skills. While prior experience is preferred, it is not strictly required. Guides will be expected to be on campus and ready to work at designated times, which may include weekends, with minimal breaks between camps. Dates and times are subject to change based on camp needs.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent by end of the 2025-26 academic school year.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
  • Must go through the Children on Campus vetting process, including Title IX training, Child Protection training, and background check.
  • Must attend mandatory, in-person training in mid-May.

Nice To Haves

  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification from a reliable vendor that will be valid for the entirety of employment.
  • Experience as a camp counselor, outdoor guide, or similar position.
  • Familiarity with working with youth.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Program Coordinator of Outdoor Education and Recreation with outdoor programming, including canoeing, kayaking, river tubing, Tango Tower operations, fire safety and building, axe and knife throwing, biking, outdoor games, and low ropes facilitation.
  • Assist with maintaining outdoor programming equipment.
  • Supervise campers and other groups during the day and overnight in their cabins when needed.
  • Enforce rules of the camps and WVU Jackson’s Mill.
  • Transporting campers in a 15-passenger van when needed.
  • Assisting with other programming (e.g., history, STEAM, other camp activities).
  • Assisting with non-programmatic tasks to help WVU Jackson’s Mill operations (e.g., dining hall cleaning and dishes, organizing storage spaces).
  • Lifeguarding during pool hours (dependent on certification).
  • Other duties as assigned.
