About The Position

Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), IDEA - RADAR (Reliability, Automation, Detection, Alerting & Readiness) team is seeking two Telemetry Data Engineers. One role focuses on Air Telemetry and the other on Liquid Cooling Telemetry. The RADAR team is Microsoft's data center telemetry trust layer, focused on telemetry validation, monitoring, detection engineering, and readiness programs to support datacenter operations and sustainability. This role will be key in building automated frameworks to validate telemetry quality, monitor device health, classify sensor states, and improve operational visibility across mechanical infrastructure in Microsoft's global datacenter fleet. The goal is to transform raw telemetry into trusted operational signals for faster issue identification, improved incident response, and support for sustainability and cooling initiatives.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of Data Engineering experience (preferred in Critical Environment/Thermal or Mechanical Systems).
  • Strong experience designing and supporting large-scale telemetry, IoT, industrial controls, monitoring systems, or sensor-driven data platforms.
  • Advanced SQL, Kusto (KQL), and Python skills.
  • Ability to build scalable data pipelines, validation frameworks, monitoring solutions, and analytics capabilities across large datasets.
  • Hands-on experience building automated validation, anomaly detection, monitoring, or operational readiness solutions that support critical infrastructure or business operations.
  • Degree in: Computer Science, Engineering, Data Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate operational requirements into scalable data solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Azure Data Explorer (ADX), Power BI, and cloud-scale analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of data pipelines, distributed systems, and telemetry architectures.
  • Experience supporting operational readiness, incident response, or automation initiatives.
  • Ability to translate operational requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Exposure to sensor quality validation, telemetry onboarding, or monitoring systems.
  • Datacenter infrastructure or critical environment experience.
  • Understanding of HVAC, chilled water systems, CRAH/AHU units, cooling loops, pumps, thermal management, or liquid cooling technologies.
  • Experience supporting sustainability programs, operational efficiency initiatives, or infrastructure monitoring.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and environmental telemetry systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop telemetry validation frameworks for mechanical infrastructure including: Air Cooling (CRAH, AHU, Chillers, Pumps, Airflow, Temperature/Humidity telemetry) and Liquid Cooling (CDU, HRU telemetry, Liquid cooling loops, Thermal analytics).
  • Define telemetry standards, expected signal inventories, and onboarding requirements for mechanical assets.
  • Build automated validation processes to identify missing, stale, flatlined, or non-conforming telemetry signals.
  • Design and implement device and sensor health classification frameworks (Healthy, Degraded, Failed, Unknown).
  • Develop fleet-wide monitoring, anomaly detection, and telemetry quality measurement solutions.
  • Create health validation models for temperature, humidity, thermal trending, liquid cooling, and environmental monitoring systems.
  • Partner with commissioning, operations, and engineering teams to establish telemetry readiness requirements for production deployments.
  • Expand RADAR's detection platform into mechanical and environmental telemetry domains.
  • Build scalable data pipelines supporting signal validation, device enumeration, health classification, and operational alerting.
  • Enable fleet-wide visibility into telemetry readiness and health through the Sea of Green platform.
  • Create operational data products and dashboards that help identify actionable issues across the global datacenter fleet.
  • Collaborate with DMCE, CE Operations, DART, THREAD, TSI, Sustainability, and other stakeholder teams to drive telemetry governance and best practices.
