Telecommunications Technician – Installation

Hays Electrical Services•Arlington, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

The Telecommunications Installation Technician installs, terminates, tests, and certifies structured cabling systems on new construction and retrofit projects under Division 27 scopes — copper and fiber backbone and horizontal cabling, pathways and supports, racks, and telecom room build-outs. Working as part of an installation crew under a Project Manager or Field Supervisor, the technician delivers clean, fully labeled, and BICSI/TIA-standard certified cabling infrastructure from rough-in through certification and turnover. The technician also coordinates patching with the customer's IT support and helps resolve reported link failures by confirming, through testing, whether the fault is in the installed cabling or elsewhere on the network.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of structured cabling installation, termination, and testing experience on commercial projects.
  • Proficiency terminating and testing both copper (Cat 6/6A) and fiber optic cabling.
  • Working knowledge of BICSI/TIA standards, including TIA-568 and TIA-606 labeling.
  • Experience with certification test equipment (e.g., Fluke DSX / CertiFiber) and interpreting results.
  • Ability to read and interpret cabling drawings, rack elevations, and floor plans.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.

Nice To Haves

  • BICSI Installer 1, Installer 2 (Copper/Optical Fiber), or Technician certification.
  • Fusion splicing experience and OSP (outside plant) exposure.
  • Familiarity with approved manufacturer systems (e.g., Belden, Berk-Tek/Leviton, CommScope, Panduit) and warranty/certification requirements.
  • Experience in data center, healthcare, or large commercial environments.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification.

Responsibilities

  • Install horizontal and backbone cabling at project scale — Category 6/6A copper and single-mode/multimode fiber — per project specifications.
  • Install cable pathways and supports: cable tray, J-hooks, conduit sleeves, innerduct, ladder rack, and firestopping.
  • Terminate copper (jacks, patch panels, 110/blocks) and fiber (fusion/mechanical splices, connectors, cassettes).
  • Dress, bundle, and label cabling and terminations per TIA-606 and project labeling schemes.
  • Build out MDF/IDF telecom rooms: mount and ground racks/cabinets, install patch panels, and organize with proper cable management.
  • Test and certify copper and fiber links (e.g., Fluke DSX/CertiFiber); record and submit certification results.
  • Coordinate patching and cross-connects with the customer's IT support to bring installed links into service.
  • When a link is reported as failed, work with the customer's IT team to isolate the cause — using certification and test results to confirm whether the fault is in the installed cabling or on the device, port, or network side.
  • Apply proper grounding and bonding of telecommunications infrastructure per standards.
  • Coordinate pathways and rough-in with the electrical prime, GC, and other trades.
  • Read and work from cabling drawings, rack elevations, floor plans, and riser diagrams.
  • Maintain red-lines, as-builts, test/certification reports, and closeout documentation.
  • Meet installation quality and production targets set by the PM/Field Supervisor.
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Generous paid time off and company holidays
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development in a supportive, fast-paced environment
