About The Position

Under the supervision of the Telecommunications Coordinator, this position performs a variety of specialized technical duties associated with the Telecommunications functions of the Sheriff's Office.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the function and operation of portable communications equipment, mobile radios, base stations and repeaters, digital trunked radio systems and point to point microwave long haul systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to administer encrypted communications.
  • Knowledge of microcomputers, peripherals and software, with the ability to work in a Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Server, and VMware ESXI environments.
  • Knowledge of various communications circuits and connectivity.
  • Intermediate knowledge of TCP/IP standards and various LAN/WAN topologies.
  • Skilled in the use of basic mechanical tools.
  • Skilled in universal safety protocols while performing essential functions.
  • Ability to operate, repair and diagnose the technical telecommunication equipment used throughout the Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to operate a variety of mechanical and electrical hand tools.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written English.
  • Ability to get along well with others.
  • Ability to safely operate a County vehicle in normal and adverse conditions.
  • Ability to ascend radio towers to heights exceeding 100 feet.
  • Specialized training in electronics or related field.
  • 12 years of electronic telecommunications technician experience in a Public Safety environment or 5 years of electronics technician experience in an encrypted Motorola digital trunked radio system environment and ETAI or FCC certification/license.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that satisfies the requirements of the job as approved by the Sheriff.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Must possess CPR and First Aid certification within the initial status period.
  • Must be willing to stay current with the latest information available on all products and equipment the Sheriff’s Office utilizes.

Nice To Haves

  • ETAI Journeyman certification (CET) and/or FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the maintenance of radio equipment and peripherals by evaluating equipment problems.
  • Assembles and programs radio kits for mobile installations and portable radio issue to users.
  • Monitors and performs administration of Motorola Radio Management system for ‘over-the air’ programming, servers and associated equipment.
  • Performs radio template building and programming for all radio equipment of supported agencies.
  • Performs radio site equipment installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Performs maintenance of Dispatch Radio Console hardware and software.
  • Performs maintenance of point-to-point long haul microwave communication systems.
  • Performs inventory control and documentation as directed by the Telecommunications Coordinator.
  • Assists with the installation of mid-range computer peripherals, microcomputers, cabling, parts and software as they are related to the radio system.
  • Recommends radio equipment, peripherals and accessories for purchase.
  • Maintains regular and acceptable attendance at such level as determined at the Sheriff's Office discretion.
  • Performs duties onsite, except those job duties that are customarily or by nature performed offsite.
  • Interacts effectively with others.
  • May be assigned other duties as necessary.
