About The Position

The City of Roanoke is looking to engage with our at-risk youth, ages 14-18 to participate in our apprenticeship under the umbrella of our Star City Safe initiative. This initiative is focused on expanded services to keep our youth and neighborhoods safe. Part of this initiative allows at-risk youth thru our Rapid Engagement of Support in the Event of Trauma (RESET) program to join our city team in a paid opportunity. Through the Teen Apprenticeship, teens will have the opportunity to learn and develop practical skills, participate in classes and workshops on and offsite, learn job skills in various departments to include: Libraries, Parks & Recreation, Technology, Berglund Center, Police, Sheriff's Department, Public Works, General Services and more while observing all health and safety codes, completing assignments, as well as interacting with city leaders, and citizens. Participants should be team orientated, organized, flexible, and willing to assist wherever possible. To be successful as an apprentice, you must be able to develop great time management and customer service skills and be willing to learn. Outstanding apprentices are here those who respond well to feedback, build good relationships with colleagues, and ultimately make a lasting impression. The starting pay for the Teen Apprenticeship is $15.00. This position is part-time not to exceed 32 hours per week. The City of Roanoke is an Equal Employment Opportunity/AA/M/F/Disability Employer. Requirements

  • Must be a teen age 14 - 18
  • A photo ID and either birth certificate or social security card must be obtained by September 30, 2026.
  • Candidates must pass a drug screening.
  • Good physical strength and hand-eye coordination may be required.
  • Good time management, critical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • A growth mindset and passion for learning.
  • Must be enrolled in a Roanoke City school or institution.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Attending workshops, trainings, and participating in as many learning opportunities as possible.
  • Assisting within the relevant department, but also learning about other aspects of the city
  • Observing health and safety procedures.
  • Complete all workshops, trainings, presentations, and other required evaluations.
  • Working in the office, the field and traveling to other sites when required.
  • Positively receiving feedback.
  • Attending meetings and offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Keeping a log of everything learned.
  • Building professional relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Being open minded and respectful of city team members, citizens, etc.
