About The Position

ARPA-E is seeking a highly motivated technology commercialization expert with a unique mix of technical, business and entrepreneurial experience to help accelerate high-impact energy technology development programs and to scale teams and technologies for commercial markets (SCALEUP) . The SCALEUP Technology-to-Market (T2M) Advisor is expected to have skills in business strategy and planning, new business development, technology marketing, competitive positioning, technology project management, supply chain analysis, and financial analysis. The SCALEUP T2M Advisor should also possess excellent coaching and team development skills to guide early-stage technologies through the evolution and execution of commercialization strategies. The most competitive candidates will have strong energy industry experience and will have managed complex, multi-year technology commercialization projects with budgets greater than $10M . This T2M Advisor will work on a combination of direct project management and broader market development activities in accordance with their skills and experience, including: Evaluating SCALEUP applicants based on technical, commercial, and team qualification criteria, and making recommendations for selection decisions. Negotiating Cooperative Research and Development Agreements, including milestones, deliverables, schedules, intellectual property provisions, and project budgets. Preparing ARPA-E-funded project teams to advance the commercialization of their technologies with strategies appropriate to their industry, commercial partners and the competitive landscape. Leading a multi-disciplinary team, including tech-to-market and technology-specific subject matter experts, to evaluate and provide guidance and feedback to project teams’ technical and commercial plans and progress, including detailed risk assessment and mitigation strategies. Connecting project teams to relevant stakeholders in industry, finance, government, nonprofits, and academia. Helping project teams formulate a strategy to raise follow-on funding in the form of investments, public-private partnerships, government grants, philanthropy, and debt financing. Advising on partnering strategy and supporting commercial arrangements, considering joint technology development, licensing, joint ventures, supply chain agreements, etc. Provide considerations on intellectual property management and implementation of business models to maximize the value of the IP. Further defining customer and competitor discovery to clarify market requirements and determine best market entry strategies and product-market fits. Overseeing techno-economic analyses to support technology development and determine cost-performance tradeoffs for projects. Cultivating a network of government, industry and investor stakeholders to facilitate transition toward market, including targeting public and private follow-on funding sources. Conducting site visits to meet project teams and evaluating commercialization progress in conjunction with ARPA-E’s Program Directors, T2M Advisors and subject matter experts. Facilitating and organizing commercialization workshops and mentorship programs. Representing ARPA-E to a range of stakeholders (investors, corporations, government agency partners, etc.). Supporting ARPA-E leadership in the planning, preparation, and implementation of policies and strategies for technology commercialization. Actively leading project management and oversight to support advancing the work of internal and external teams.

Requirements

  • Broad technical background including engineering, technology development and/or applied research.
  • Energy industry experience managing complex technology commercialization projects with budgets greater than $10M and spanning multiple years
  • Superior analytical skills with experience in areas such as market research, financial analysis, product development and/or supply chain/manufacturing.
  • Experience with technoeconomic analyses and formulation of business plans.
  • Experience developing and validating customer value propositions and conducting market research and field trials.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical and/or financial ideas and concepts to a wide range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest/expertise in energy and energy technologies.
  • A minimum of 15 years of work experience, including a combination of technology/research and business experience
  • Experience working in a cross-functional manufacturing environment or capital construction project as a project manager or engineering lead.
  • PhD and/or MBA degree is desired; a technical degree and a graduate degree are required.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to undertake a significant amount of travel is required.
  • T2M Advisor positions are designated as 'positions of public trust', and pre-employment background checks are required.
  • Additionally, financial disclosure reporting will be required
