About The Position

Under general supervision, the Technology Support Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and effective use of technology across assigned schools or district services. This position provides vital hands-on technical support, installation, configuration, and maintenance of computer systems, software, and peripheral equipment. The Specialist also empowers school employees by providing training and assistance, fostering a technologically proficient learning and working environment that supports student success and district objectives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of progressive experience in desktop/laptop support, software troubleshooting, and hardware maintenance in a networked environment.
  • Must possess and maintain an active Dell Technician Certification (or be able to obtain within a specified timeframe if an alternative experience clause is used).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, complex technical documentation, instructional manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write comprehensive reports, business correspondence, system documentation, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively prepare and present technical information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data.
  • Ability to apply concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations, including system capacity planning and budget management.
  • Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding in carrying out complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to analyze complex information, identify critical issues, and use logic to address work-related issues and problems, often involving multiple integrated systems.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for system design, troubleshooting, and security incident response.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, Board of Education policies, and relevant legal/regulatory mandates (e.g., data privacy).
  • Strong knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems (Windows, macOS, ChromeOS), and software applications commonly used in K-12 education (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, educational apps).
  • Experience with installing, configuring, and troubleshooting peripherals (printers, scanners, projectors, interactive displays).
  • Understanding of basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi) and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • Familiarity with mobile device management (MDM) systems and supporting various devices (iPads, Chromebooks).
  • Ability to learn and support new technologies and software applications quickly.
  • Physical demands require routine lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g., servers, cameras, control panels), and occasional lifting/moving of items up to 75 pounds.
  • Routine local travel between district sites is required; no overnight travel is required, with the exception of conferences or specialized training.
  • Duties are conducted indoors and outdoors, sometimes in network closets or areas with varying environmental conditions.
  • Duties require constant work with computers and monitors, and interaction with electronic and electrical equipment, creating possible eyestrain and requiring adherence to safety procedures.
  • May require working at heights (e.g., on ladders for camera or speaker installation/maintenance) or in confined spaces.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen, use hands with fine motor to, handle, or feel, travel from building to other sites and/or reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Instructional Technology or a related field is preferred.
  • Verifiable experience supporting technology in a K-12 public school environment is strongly preferred.
  • A+ Certification is beneficial but not required.
  • Other relevant industry certifications (e.g., Network+, Security+, Google Level 1 or 2, Microsoft Certified Professional) are a plus.
  • Successful attainment or renewal of the A+ or other IT industry certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Security+, Network+, ISC2 CC, etc…) is required within the first eighteen (18) months of employment and must stay valid during employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely Tier 1 and Tier 2 technical support to end-users (staff, administrators, and students) for hardware, software, network connectivity, and peripheral issues.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical problems in person, remotely, and via a helpdesk ticketing system, ensuring clear communication and effective solutions.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot desktops, laptops, tablets (e.g., Windows, Chromebooks, iPads), printers, interactive panels, projectors, and other classroom/administrative technologies.
  • Support and troubleshoot operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, ChromeOS) and standard productivity software (e.g., O365, Google Workspace).
  • Assist in the deployment, installation, customization, and maintenance of instructional and administrative software applications and district-wide systems (e.g., SIS, LMS, MDM).
  • Manage user accounts and permissions as directed, adhering to security protocols.
  • Perform routine maintenance, updates, and upgrades on hardware and software to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Assist with inventory management of technology assets, including tracking, auditing, and surplus processes.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions, workshops, and orientations for staff on the effective use of hardware, software, and technology resources.
  • Create and maintain user-friendly documentation, guides, and knowledge base articles.
  • Advise staff on technology best practices and assist in integrating technology effectively into instructional and administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate with school staff and department colleagues to support technology initiatives and projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, inventory, and project status.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, educational technology trends, and security best practices through professional development, research, and training.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and recommendation of new technologies and software.
  • Escalate complex issues to senior specialists or vendors as appropriate.
  • May be required to drive a district or personal vehicle to provide support at various school sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the technology needs of the district.
