About The Position

The Office of Technology Transfer within the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research at Penn State seeks qualified applicants to fill three(3) vacancies for the role of Technology Licensing Officer. The areas may cover Physical Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, Material Sciences, Biological Sciences, Software, Creative Works, and AI. The mission of the Office of Technology Transfer is to protect Penn State intellectual property (IP), identify its commercial potential, and stimulate economic development through the transfer of Penn State technologies to the marketplace. Penn State set a new record with $1.44 billion in total research expenditures for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

Requirements

  • A strong background in a closely related discipline aligned with the areas mentioned above is required.
  • The candidate should have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, good negotiation skills, the ability to interpret and manage numerous complex agreements, the ability to manage and coordinate multiple and diverse projects simultaneously through to completion, be highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a team environment, and have the ability to establish priorities.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates with experience in tech transfer in a higher education setting are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Managing a substantial portfolio of intellectual property, screening invention disclosures, and assessing their commercial potential
  • Formulating patent strategies and coordinating with external patent counsel
  • Marketing of inventions
  • Negotiating and drafting intellectual property agreements including license agreements, option agreements, interinstitutional agreements, etc.
  • Communicating and coordinating frequently with other stakeholders in the Invent Penn State community
