We are modernizing the health care system through modern and innovative technologies, AI, comprehensive clinical, and extensive experience in improving operational and clinical performance Optum’s Technology Development Internship Program: The Technology Development Program (TDP) internship at Optum includes a 10-week experience designed for current students who are interested in building a career in technology. As part of the program, interns gain hands-on experience, receive mentoring from technology professionals, participate in networking opportunities, and collaborate with other interns as part of a cohort-based experience. As an intern on our Optum Technology team, you will be provided opportunities to channel your curiosity into initiative, working alongside distinguished engineers and developers pursuing innovations that improve the health care experience for everyone. We encourage you to dive-in, explore and ask questions about creative ways to use technology to help make the health care system work like an actual system. The intent of our internship program is to create a pipeline for future opportunities, including return internships or full-time employment at Optum, depending on eligibility, performance, and business needs.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing 2-year technical college degree, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field such as IT, MIS, or other technology-focused disciplines
  • Foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Large Language Models (LLMs), with demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools to enhance productivity and problem-solving
  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited College / University or 2-year technical college during the duration of the internship. Internships are not intended for graduating seniors
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization. F-1 visa holders with Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) who require visa sponsorship, TN visa holders, current H-1B visa holders, and/or those requiring green card sponsorship will not be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Proficient in one or more coding languages (Example: Python, Java, C, SQL, .NET)
  • Involvement in any additional technical activities (Robotics, Comp. Science/Tech clubs, Tech or Engineering side projects, GitHub, etc.) and/or tech related employment experience
  • Exposure to cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Demonstrated capability to accomplish the following: Apply AI tools to support analysis, reporting, automation, or problem-solving
  • Build effective prompts and use AI-enabled tools to explore data, summarize information, or generate insights
  • Integrate AI into workflows (e.g., reporting, dashboards, operations processes)
  • Analyze data using AI-enabled tools and generate insights
  • Collaborate with teams to identify opportunities where technology and AI can improve processes or user experiences
  • Basic familiarity with responsible and compliant use of AI tools
  • Experience with software engineering tools such as source code control systems (i.e. GIT, GitHub), IDE, Continuous Delivery and deployment pipeline, etc.
  • Understanding of Agile Frameworks, methodologies, roles, and tools (Kanban, Scrum, SaFE, LeSS, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • The TDP internship program places interns on teams with fellow TDP interns to work on meaningful and impactful projects throughout the summer
  • The TDP intern team will have the ability to present their work to mentors and leaders on multiple occasions, allowing for iteration and continued progress
