About The Position

The Design Technologist I in Grafton ND for Ultimate Windows R&D is a critical extension of the centralized R&D organization located in Warroad MN. This role is embedded in the Grafton, ND manufacturing facility to ensure strong alignment between product development, production execution, and the voice of the customer. This role operates under and represents R&D, serving as the primary conduit for design intent, engineering rigor, and customer-driven improvements within the plant environment.

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (e.g., Inventor, Creo, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Proficiency in creating and maintaining detailed engineering models / drawings.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production environments.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts across teams.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with quality systems, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Experience supporting production teams and implementing engineering changes.
  • Knowledge of window/door systems or similar building products (a plus).
  • Experience with PLM or document control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily design and drafting support for products manufactured in Grafton.
  • Create, update, and maintain accurate engineering drawings, models, and print documentation.
  • Ensure design changes and specifications are properly implemented, documented, and communicated to relevant stakeholders. Write, execute and track ECN and ECI tasks.
  • Assist in prototype creation and production testing of design concepts.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying design or documentation gaps impacting production.
  • Act as the on-site voice of R&D for product design, engineering prints, and technical clarification.
  • Understand and align with project strategies.
  • Serve as a critical communication bridge between Grafton operations and Warroad-based R&D teams.
  • Capture and communicate field issues, requests, and improvement opportunities back to R&D.
  • Document requests, issues, and implemented changes with clear visual and written communication.
  • Capture images, data, and observations to support root cause analysis and solution development.
  • Report on outcomes after design or process changes are implemented, ensuring feedback is closed-loop.
  • Partner closely with Grafton production and quality teams to resolve design-related issues.
  • Communicate product design activity with cross-functional departments.
  • Participate in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support implementation of engineering changes within manufacturing processes and quality systems.
