About The Position

This position provides technical assistance for the medicine service of the Veterinary Medical Centre, supporting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on animals. The role requires coverage for the special procedures room and potentially other areas within the hospital. The nature of the work involves constant animal handling and manipulation in a large hospital environment, exposing employees to animal dander, waste, and unpredictability. It requires substantial lifting, moving, and cleaning, and operates in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. Employees may encounter unpleasant odors and must adhere to dress code, traffic pattern restrictions, and safety protocols associated with working with animals.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a recognized two-year veterinary technology program.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists (SAVT).
  • At least three years of full-time experience as a technician in a general practice or a veterinary referral center.
  • Demonstrated experience with directing and evaluating the work of others.
  • Proficient veterinary technician skills with a sound knowledge of medicine procedures for small animals.
  • Proficient in patient care/case management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Demonstrated initiative with the ability to make independent decisions based on objective judgment within the framework of hospital policy.
  • Ability to adapt to and work in a dynamic work environment maintaining a professional and positive demeanor.
  • Ability to effectively work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to evaluate the work of others.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Criminal Record Check required.

  • Applicants who meet the qualifications of a CUPE 1975 Phase 5 will be given priority.
  • Consideration may be given to applicants not fully qualified but showing interest in learning and developing skills, with potential for lower classification and training provided.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on animals presented to the medicine service.
  • Ensure high-quality client service and patient care.
  • Book and schedule appointments for the service.
  • Handle billing, respond to client calls, and manage animal handling and restraint.
  • Assist with specialized diagnostic procedures.
  • Monitor and administer sedation/minor anesthesia for medical procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records.
  • Bill for supplies and services.
  • Organize and distribute client education materials.
  • Coordinate internal consults and communications with all departments of the VMC.
  • Maintain service-specific inventory.
  • Ensure organization and cleanliness of areas used by the service.
  • Provide technical education and instruction to veterinary undergraduate/graduate and veterinary technology program students.
  • Maintain and upkeep equipment used by the internal medicine team and procedures room.
