About The Position

The incumbent ensures that all heat treat furnaces are operating properly and that parts being processed meet specifications. This position, along with other Metallurgical Technicians, reports to the Met Lab Supervisor (Sr. Engineer II). The incumbent issues hold tickets reporting why parts did not meet specifications and sends email notifications to the appropriate distribution/group. The incumbent informs furnace operators, department foreman, and the Metallurgical Lab of any deviation or malfunction of furnaces. If adjustments to a furnace do not correct the problem, the incumbent has the authority to shut down the furnace until the problem is solved. The individual’s job is primarily performed in the metallurgical lab, but they will also perform inspections/audits on the floor and collect samples from the floor. The individual prepares samples for examination in the lab and assists with testing in the lab when there is a specific problem. They may be asked to assist in other testing needed when it is necessary to shut down a furnace producing bad parts until the reason can be determined. The incumbent may assist with any other metallurgical problems that arise. They must maintain their own work schedule with little supervision to cover production requirements. The individual has regular contact with department foremen and furnace operators, which requires tact to avoid friction and influence to obtain results. The described duties are semi-diversified, somewhat repetitive in nature, and require little supervision. The incumbent must perform analyses of facts to determine actions that could have an impact on final product reliability.
