Requirements

  • Proficiency with basic hand tools including, but not limited to, snips, socket sets, screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters, strippers and crimpers.
  • Knowledge of cable installation practices including dressing, lacing, structured cabling implementation and simple network design including redundancy concepts.
  • Knowledge to operate scissor lifts, cable tuggers, bucket trucks and/or other simple machinery used in OSP installations.
  • Competency with technical devices and related software or applications to operate laptops, tablets and/or cell phones necessary to support work and communication in the field.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic and copper cable designs, types and related manufacturer specifications that optimize installation as well as prevent damage of said cables during installation.
  • Understanding of basic termination methods for fiber optic cabling including mechanical splices, fusion splicing and related best practices for handling and cleaning various connectors.
  • Proficiency with basic labeling equipment, labeling best practices and organizational methods to ensure efficient completion and turnover per customer specifications.
  • Knowledge of various manufacturers and installation practices related to cabling conveyance including conduit, ladder rack, basket tray, fiber guide and innerduct.
  • Proficiency with common trouble shooting methods, cable testing processes and testing equipment, and validation documentation.
  • Competency with measuring tools including lasers and precision with following direction and implementing instructions.
  • Good work ethic and a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good, sound decisions based on information given.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 75 lbs.; work in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and adherence to best practices for installing fiber optic cables through various forms of conveyance.
  • Proficiency with handling multiple types of enclosures for housing fiber optic cabling in both outside plant and inside plant environments.
  • Solid understanding of best practices for cabling routing and diversity requirements as well as dressing standards and related materials.

Responsibilities

  • Support the installation, termination, splicing, and testing of fiber optic cabling in outside plant environments.
  • Maintain a safe and controlled environment while working in and around confined spaces, on the Right of Way, and in various assigned work sites.
  • Arrive on time and prepared to work on a daily basis with required tools and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of productivity and readily adapt to team suggestions to maximize accomplishments under time restrictions.
  • Be comfortable working around other trades and helping to create a work environment that is mutually productive.
  • Respect and comply with all safety and security protocols related to industry and site-specific access in campus and data center environments.
  • Take the initiative to keep work sites clean and organized throughout the workday.
  • Read and comprehend written scopes of work and supporting documentation including engineered drawings, butterflies and a Bill of Material (BOM).
  • Coordinate and communicate activities with other employees, departments, and management as a team player.
