Position Summary The Technician I - Metallurgical Laboratory is an entry-level laboratory position responsible for preparing samples, conducting basic metallurgical testing, and supporting material evaluations under the direction of laboratory leadership. This role performs a variety of testing and sample preparation activities that help ensure product quality and compliance with customer and industry requirements. Technicians work in a fast-paced, production-oriented laboratory environment and contribute to testing activities within Mechanical Testing, Sample Preparation, Metallographic Testing, Magnetic Testing, or Heat Treating operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work in a production-oriented environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Basic math, computer, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and work instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to work safely with direct supervision in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, manufacturing, or a related technical field.
  • Previous laboratory, manufacturing, quality, or testing experience.
  • Familiarity with mechanical testing or metallographic preparation techniques.
  • Experience working with laboratory or production equipment.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical principles and laboratory practices.
  • Ability to operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to analyze routine test results and identify discrepancies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to solve routine problems using established procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for metallurgical analysis and examination.
  • Perform mechanical testing including hardness, tensile, tension, resistivity, and other standard laboratory tests.
  • Conduct metallographic evaluations using polishing equipment, etchants, mounting techniques, and related laboratory equipment.
  • Collect, record, and maintain accurate test data and documentation.
  • Operate laboratory equipment in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
  • Assist in evaluating materials and reporting test results.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory work areas.
  • Follow quality, safety, and environmental procedures at all times.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
