About The Position

This position is designed to provide technical assistance to clinicians and undergraduate students essential to the provision of dermatology services for animals presented to or in the care of the Veterinary Medical Centre. The incumbent in this position will report to the Manager of Health Services and will assist in all technical aspects of the dermatology service. During periods of low activity or high demand this individual may be assigned to other areas within the Veterinary Medical Centre. Subject to unpredictability of working with animals, both large and small, as animal handling and manipulation is a constant part of the position. This position works in an animal facility with large animals (equine, bovine, porcine, caprine, ovine, and some exotics i.e. llamas, alpacas, etc) and small animals (canine, feline, avian, and some exotics) which exposes employees to animal dander, waste, and unpredictability. Requires continuous walking and standing, frequent lifting of patients/equipment and physical restraint of animals. The work is fast paced with frequent multiple demands and interruptions. Subject to some unpleasant odors, dress code, and traffic pattern restrictions.

Requirements

Graduate of a recognized two year veterinary technology program and registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) and the Association of Veterinary Technologists (SAVT).
At least 2 years of full-time experience as a technician in a general veterinary practice or in a veterinary referral center.
Demonstrated experience with directing and evaluating the work of others.
Proficient technical skills demonstrated in the various fields mentioned above.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
Ability to adapt to and work in a dynamic work environment maintaining a professional and positive demeanor.
Demonstrated effective organizational and time management skills.
Ability to effectively work independently as well as part of a team.
Ability to function under pressure and in stressful situations.
Ability to evaluate the work of others.
Sound computer knowledge and proficient with Microsoft products.
Criminal Record Check required.

Nice To Haves

Candidates who are certified with the Academy of Dermatology Veterinary Technicians (ADVT).

Responsibilities

As instructed by licensed veterinarians, involves provision of assistance for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on animals presented to the dermatology service.
Provision of high quality client service, communication, and patient care.
Booking and scheduling appointments for the service, including technician driven appointments.
Billing, responding to client calls and emails.
Handling and restraint of animals often taking place on ground level with the patients.
Sedation; monitoring.
Maintaining supplies for the area, including allergy testing and serums.
Maintaining accurate and complete medical records and billing of supplies and services.
May assist with the supervision, instruction and demonstration of skills to undergraduate veterinary and veterinary technology program students.
Responsible for the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and facility.
May be asked to provide technical assistance throughout other areas of the hospital as needed.
