About The Position

The Communications Radio Technician will support, maintain, and enhance the radio systems utilized at the MBTA by performing corrective and preventative maintenance on a variety of radio systems equipment, including, but not limited to, two-way radio systems, simulcast radio systems, control point equipment, site antenna equipment, Bi-Directional Amplifiers, Distributed Antenna Systems, radio dispatch consoles and all associated equipment.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of experience in Radio system maintenance.
  • Experience working with service monitors, spectrum/network analyzers, and RF cable testers.
  • Effective analytical skills and field documentation skills.
  • Ability to use MS Office applications.
  • Basic electronics knowledge.
  • Radio system-related experience: L3Harris, Motorola, Tait, and/or Kenwood, etc.
  • Successful applicants must possess the English language skills necessary to comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, and inquiries.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).
  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.

  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if current student or recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection).
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op.
  • Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding, working in their positions, and throughout the duration of their program.
  • All employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States and on an unrestricted basis.
  • The MBTA does not have an employer work sponsorship program.

Responsibilities

  • Possess knowledge and work experience related to the existing L3Harris multi-site LMR system and produce necessary repairs and/or recommend changes to ensure peak efficiency.
  • Monitor and evaluate the existing radio systems for trends of non-performance, identify possible reasons for the lack of performance, and make recommendations for changes that would restore the LMR system to peak performance.
  • Evaluate the radio system for failures and perform proactive repairs as needed.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning radio system equipment to sufficiently identify, resolve, and/or repair malfunctions, returning the radio system equipment to a pre-failure state of operation in the shortest amount of time possible.
  • Read schematics, block diagrams, and flowcharts to maintain and repair all supported radio systems and equipment.
  • Maintain, test, and implement radio system modifications, document all the changes, and ensure modifications meet required MBTA rules and regulations where applicable.
  • Update As-Built documentation.
  • Install, maintain, and repair CAD AVL wide area mobile data systems and equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and repair distributed antenna systems. Document signal levels.
  • Install, maintain, and repair radio infrastructure.
  • Recommend and maintain preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all supported radio systems and equipment.
  • Examine, test, clean, and replace electronic components, RF cables, connectors, surge protectors, and other related parts.
  • Maintain parts inventory by recording all parts and those used, advising Management when parts are required, and performing inventory tasks.
  • Provide end-users instruction in the proper operation of all supported radio system equipment.
  • Respond to end-user inquiries, support requests and trouble reports.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
