About The Position

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte (CTC) is seeking on-call Theatre Technical Staff to provide expertise in various technical theatre fields including costumes, lighting, sound, loading, rigging, prop, and carpentry. These are project-based, as-needed positions that vary in duration from 1-2 days up to 3-4 weeks. This role is ideal for individuals seeking supplemental income and who enjoy diverse project-based technical theatre work. Flexibility to work occasional nights and weekends is required.

Requirements

  • Carpentry skills essential.
  • Scenic painting and/or fine art skills essential.
  • Ability to read plots and paperwork (Electricians).
  • Ability to safely lift 50+lbs (Electricians, Lightboard Operators).
  • Ability to work safely at height 15'+ (Electricians, Lightboard Operators).

Nice To Haves

  • Welding experience a plus (Carpenters).
  • Background in theatrical carpentry is helpful (Run Crew).
  • Experience working in a backstage theatre environment is a plus (Run Crew).
  • Experience with rigging and fly system and experience loading and unloading weight from a fly system preferred (Electricians).
  • Knowledge of lighting software programs (Vectorworks, Lightwright, EOS) preferred (Electricians).
  • Programming knowledge is a plus (Lightboard Operators).
  • Experience with fly systems preferred (Lightboard Operators).
  • Previous professional theatrical costume shop experience preferred (Costume Shop Stitchers).
  • Additional knowledge in makeup/ hair preferred (Wardrobe Run Crew).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical theatre expertise in costumes, lighting, sound, loading, rigging, props, and carpentry.
  • Construct set pieces (Carpenters).
  • Paint and finish scenic elements and backdrops (Scenic Artists).
  • Construct, fabricate, acquire, maintain, and repair props (Props Artisans).
  • Supervise and operate technical aspects of a production during performances (Run Crew).
  • Load-in and change over lighting and electrical elements for each show (Electricians).
  • Operate light board for rehearsals and performances (Lightboard Operators).
  • Operate a spotlight in a theatre setting (Spotlight Operators).
  • Tune the house and run audio cues for shows (Soundboard Operators).
  • Mix microphones for larger shows where mics are worn (Sound Mixer).
  • Assist with audio system load-in, mic setup, and maintenance (A2).
  • Stitch, alter, and finish costumes (Costume Shop Stitchers).
  • Supervise Wardrobe Run Crew, manage garment cleaning schedules, and coordinate backstage paperwork (Wardrobe Supervisor).
  • Care for, maintain, repair, and clean costumes, shoes, undergarments, hats, and costume-related props (Wardrobe Run Crew).
  • Assist actors with quick changes (Wardrobe Run Crew).
