About The Position

The Technical Specialist will provide technical coating expertise to Groome’s Engineering and Sales teams, with a focus on coating specification review, customer-facing technical support, estimating, and proposal development for power generation and heavy industrial customers. Success requires strong knowledge of coating technologies, surface preparation requirements, corrosion protection, quality control, inspection practices, and industry standards. The ideal candidate can write clear coating specifications, interpret customer requirements, support competitive bids, and help Groome deliver technically sound, comprehensive solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting coating projects in natural gas and coal-fired power generation, utilities, IPPs, co-ops, industrial boilers, steel, cement, pulp and paper, refinery, chemical, manufacturing, or similar heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of corrosion protection, coating failures, surface preparation, abrasive blasting, waterjetting, abrasive media, containment, environmental controls, coating application, and repair procedures.
  • Ability to review coating specifications for tanks, ducts, stacks, structural steel, scrubbers, precipitators, baghouses, ash handling systems, concrete surfaces, secondary containment, and other industrial assets.
  • Familiarity with coating systems including epoxies, urethanes, zinc-rich primers, high-temperature coatings, linings, chemical-resistant systems, immersion service coatings, and specialty protective coatings.
  • Experience reviewing drawings, customer standards, inspection reports, field conditions, photos, bid documents, and project requirements to develop practical scopes and recommendations.
  • Preferred certifications or training may include AMPP / NACE CIP, SSPC PCI, Protective Coating Specialist, or related coatings, corrosion, inspection, or materials credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Review coating specifications, scopes of work, surface preparation requirements, inspection hold points, and application criteria aligned with customer needs and industry standards.
  • Partner with Sales and Operations to support site evaluations, estimating, bid strategy, technical clarifications, proposal content, and quote creation.
  • Apply AMPP and customer-specific standards to coatings evaluations, specifications, inspection requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Participate in site walks, pre-bid meetings, field reviews, customer discussions, and project handoffs to clarify technical requirements and reduce execution risk.
  • Define inspection requirements, documentation expectations, acceptance criteria, surface preparation checks, DFT requirements, environmental controls, and coating repair procedures.
  • Work closely with Sales, Operations, Safety, project management, and field leadership to support accurate quotes, executable scopes, safe planning, and successful project delivery.
