About The Position

TRATON is one of the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, with brands like Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. In April 2023, TRATON began integrating its independent brand R&D organizations into a single global TRATON R&D organization to accelerate the introduction of new technologies and solutions. This role is for a Technical Specialist Engineer with Polymers/Plastics experience on the TRATON USA’s R&D Team. The engineer will advise the materials engineering (ME) team in the Product Development Process, focusing on material selection, root cause failure analysis, quality assurance, polymer testing, metrology, environmental resilience evaluation, and drawing approvals. Industry experience with Polymers, Plastics, Elastomers, or Composites is required. Sealing and/or seal design experience is desired.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science and at least 9 years of product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of lead experience OR Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science and at least 5 years of product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of lead experience OR PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science and at least 3 years of product design/development or new technologies and/or computer science experience
  • At least 2 years of lead experience
  • Industry Experience working with Polymers; Plastics, Elastomers or Composites required.
  • Qualified candidates, excluding current employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Sealing and or seal design experience desired.
  • Working with a research and development organization on design engineering in automotive industry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Technical leadership in the core area of responsibility for the material laboratories and team through leadership and coaching.
  • Maintaining the company library and reference materials for polymers (software, databases, FEA Material Models, etc.).
  • Applying knowledge of material science to supply technical support to engineering, innovation, manufacturing, marketing, outside services, and vendors.
  • Contribute to internal material queries and materials research projects; perform failure analysis, answering chemical compatibility questions and issues.
  • Evolving Material engineering procedures and specifications in area of responsibility.
  • Leading projects and programs involving quality control and cost savings.
  • Supporting development of the Material database, material engineering specifications, procedures, and standards for all of International Motors LLC.
  • Driving the full integration of the ME team in Product Engineering Organization, especially for the upfront phases of product development through the proactive participation to the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), PFMEA (Process FMEA) and DVP (Design Validation Plan) definition.
  • Domestic and International travel is required 10% of the time.
