About The Position

The Johns Hopkins Data Science and AI Institute (DSAI) is a new pan-institutional initiative focused on advancing artificial intelligence and its applications. DSAI aims to revolutionize discovery by developing AI that evolves collaboratively with human intelligence. The institute integrates the mathematical, computational, and ethical foundations of AI with various domains including Health & Medicine, Scientific Discovery, Engineered Systems, Security & Safety, and People, Policy & Governance. DSAI is seeking a Technical Project Manager (TPM) to support multiple project teams in managing project scope, estimation, milestone criteria, status tracking, and resource allocation. This role requires a blend of expertise in modern scientific computing, AI/ML, data science, and complex software project management to ensure the systematic definition, tracking, and delivery of high-value projects across diverse scientific and policy fields. The TPM will be instrumental in building a professional-scale software engineering capability and enhancing infrastructure, hardware, and personnel within the DSAI initiative.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Quantitative Discipline such as Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Bioinformatics or similar.
  • Four years of experience related to project management in the software industry.
  • Three years of experience as a professional software developer.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge and track record using software development processes such as agile and Rational Unified.
  • Proficiency with modern project management software, wikis, and related tools.
  • Experience collaborating with developers and scientists to define project scope, milestones, and estimates.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and modern software application development frameworks and libraries.
  • Familiarity with modern scientific computing, AI/ML and data science technology concepts.
  • Strong communication, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills tailoring content depending on audience and ensuring that messaging lands with all stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree
  • Six (6) years’ experience project management in the software industry.
  • Experience working with research and scientific stakeholders in an academic or industry research setting.
  • Knowledge or experience with PHI and PII data privacy regulations and compliance requirements and frameworks.
  • Relevant project management certifications such as PMP or SCM.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple project teams simultaneously across the institute.
  • Work with engineering teams and partners to define and document user and functional scenarios, requirements, and project scope.
  • Work with engineering teams and partners to support project planning and delivery, and to define and document milestone criteria, objectives and key results, reviews, results, and status.
  • Report project status to leadership.
  • Utilize DSAI engineering’s project management tools and processes.
  • Create and manage schedules and provide ongoing project status tracking.
  • Use feedback from partners and engineering teams to continuously improve management artifacts and processes.
  • Lead and participate in service activities, potentially including providing guidance to faculty, staff, and students on project management, developing and delivering presentations and short courses, attending conferences and workshops, and hiring.
  • Perform other activities as needed.
