About The Position

We are currently seeking a technical professional to join the Signals Collections and Analysis Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at ORNL. This position will support custom electrical design and instrumentation control activities which will empower new discoveries within the nuclear fuel cycle and advance the nation’s nuclear nonproliferation objectives. The technical professional will support both hardware and software development for electrical instrumentation and controls engineering (EI&C), to include custom circuit design, power distribution hardware, embedded systems, and industrial sensing applications. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and creative problem solver, comfortable parsing complex electrical sensing and power distribution problems to produce customized solutions to support the construction and upkeep of a one-of-a-kind facility supporting nonproliferation objectives. The NSSD at ORNL leads ground-breaking research to address critical threats to national security. Leveraging a diverse array of capabilities in nuclear nonproliferation, data analytics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical resiliency, geospatial science, and high-performance computing, our organization seeks to produce world-class S&T products for sensitive national security missions.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in electrical system design and integration.
  • Knowledge of electrical circuits, microprocessors, and embedded systems.
  • Appreciable understanding of industrial sensing technologies, with a demonstrated understanding and capability to select, design, and install such systems when provided higher level goals.
  • Proficiency in using electrical design software to plan analog and power electronics and subsequently produce clear, concise electrical drawings (e.g. SPICE, AutoCAD Electrical, and/or SolidWorks Electrical).
  • A desire to participate in continuous professional development, to include training, professional society membership, conference attendance, and related activities to ensure electrical capabilities within the group remain sharp and up-to-date.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate with both technical personnel and translate complex concepts into content for higher level understanding.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, with 3+ years of experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical system design and a solid understanding of the integration of electrical circuits, microprocessors, and embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in industrial sensing technologies, including independent selection, procurement, and integration of such methods in complex environments.
  • Experience with industrial networking solutions for instrument control and communications.
  • Experience in the construction of custom electrical assemblies, from design through fabrication to installation and operation.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a complex research environment requiring adaptability to satisfy sponsor and mission requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of interdisciplinary specialists to translate facility needs into conceptual electrical solutions for nonproliferation objectives.
  • Spearhead the design, and fabrication of such custom electrical assemblies, to include circuit design, component selection, layout, and fabrication. Test assemblies as necessary to ensure performance meets specifications.
  • Provide guidance on electrical assembly installation and operation.
  • Troubleshoot and revise completed assemblies as needed to ensure operational excellence.
  • Conceive, write, and maintain technical documentation of completed assemblies for long-term maintenance needs and future training objectives.
  • Evaluate hardware options and select appropriate instrumentation controls systems which meet project level requirements. This includes compliance with all applicable electrical codes and standards, ensures safety, reliability, and reproducibility for long-term sustainability of the program.
  • Represent the team in conceptual design reviews to ensure assigned work meets objectives and meshes well within the complementary work performed by collaborative teams.
  • Work both independently and in team settings to ensure assigned objectives are completed on time, within scope, and satisfy operational excellence for the needs of the program.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
