About The Position

The NRC is seeking a Technical Officer in Mechanical Engineering to support the activities of the Optical Technologies team within the Clean Energy Innovation (CEI) Research Centre. The CEI Research Centre delivers cutting-edge technologies to Canada’s energy industries, bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and industrial applications to help Canadian industry advance clean energy innovations and industrial decarbonization. Within the Optical Technologies Team, the role contributes to the development of optical, spectroscopic, and ultrasonic measurement technologies, systems, and instruments designed for material analysis and process monitoring. From proof of concept to industrial demonstration, the role is responsible for the design and optimization of complex laboratory setups and instrument prototypes requiring precise mechanical, thermal, and optical alignment, robust enclosures suitable for demanding industrial environments, and efficient integration of mechanical, electronic, and optical subsystems. The ability to transform laboratory-scale concepts into durable, field-deployable prototypes distinguishes this role and strengthens NRC’s capabilities in advanced sensor and instrumentation technologies for in-situ and real-time measurement. The work also includes technical documentation of experiments, maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment, and management of supplies and instrument procurement required for ongoing projects. The role involves participation in design reviews, team and project meetings, training activities, and health and safety initiatives, contributing to the smooth operation and collaboration within the group. There is also an opportunity to contribute to major sensor technology development projects with potential international reach.

Requirements

  • University degree or college diploma in mechanical engineering or other discipline related to this position.
  • Significant experience in computer-aided mechanical design (SolidWorks or Inventor) of components, subsystems, or complete system.
  • Experience designing robust systems suited for industrial or harsh environments.
  • Significant experience in the assembly and mechanical adjustment of systems and instrument prototypes.
  • Basic experience conducting experimental work in R&D laboratories involving optics and ultrasonics.
  • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to the transfer of technologies from the laboratory to fieldable applications.
  • Reliability Status (verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required).
  • Excellent command of computer aided mechanical design (SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent software).
  • Knowledge of mechanical and thermal analysis, including finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Knowledge of high precision manufacturing and assembly tolerances.
  • Understanding of the principles and use of optical and ultrasonic sensors.
  • Strong skills in manufacturing processes, including 3D printing, machining, and assembly.
