About The Position

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for motivated and experienced Technical Officer (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) to join the Central Operations Services (COS) Engineering Delivery Team and provide high-quality technical services within the designated area of responsibility to strengthen and enhance education and research support outcomes. The Technical Officer (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) will work independently and collaboratively within the team to contribute high quality technical services that support teaching and research activities within the designated areas of responsibility. This role involves delivering hands on assistance for practical classes, demonstrations, and research operations, maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and managing inventories. The Technical Officer will also provide guidance and training for staff and students, contribute to the development of safety documentation, and ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety standards in alignment with University policies and legislation. The position requires strong problem solving and communication skills to manage the delivery of technical support and resolve issues impacting the research operations of academic staff and students. You will be responsible for setting up and operating complex or bespoke laboratory equipment, preparing operating procedures, and assisting with the implementation of new processes, systems, and ways of working to improve efficiency and service delivery. Collaboration with other technical teams and University departments will be essential to support resource sharing and consistent practices. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or in a related field or relevant training and experience
  • Experience in providing technical support, training, and routine maintenance on common chemical engineering or laboratory equipment in a research or teaching laboratory environment
  • Experience engaging with external parties or contractors to coordinate repair or procurement of equipment to maintain research continuity
  • Experience in the safe handling/storage/disposal of biological and hazardous substances (e.g., chemicals, waste, compressed gases and cryogens) and relevant experience in adhering to and improving WHS compliance in modern laboratory environments
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills, with an ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers
  • Full strength and range of movement in both arms and flexible joints to lift, carry, push, pull a variety of loads; ability to manipulate items and tolerate repetitive physical tasks
  • Unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or qualification in process control, industrial chemical engineering and WHS compliance or other relevant practical engineering skills (electronics, additive manufacturing, machining, CAD)

Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical support and services in accordance with the role and tailor services to user/client requirements within remit and escalate service gaps/feedback as appropriate
  • Support the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, ensuring that the work area’s education/research requirements are effectively met
  • Lead by example by demonstrating a strong adherence to established WHS and compliance procedures, and maintain professionalism in all customer-facing activities and communications
  • Support teaching operations and deliver training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, building inductions, and general laboratory procedures
  • Contribute to a positive, professional and customer focused team culture
  • Collaborate with other technical support teams across the university and support the operations of projects managed centrally as required.
