About The Position

The Opportunity: We are seeking a Technical Lead to support initiatives that modernize the Department of Veterans Affairs’ VADIR platform. In this role, you will leverage modern data engineering practices, cloud-native tools, and automation to address complex data challenges. Your technical expertise will guide architecture decisions, build resilient and scalable pipelines, and ensure data assets are well-governed, discoverable, and ready for analytics and application use across the VA. You will evaluate and recommend tools and solutions informed by current environments, industry standards, and modern DevSecOps and DataOps practices. Collaborating with software engineers, product teams, architects, and stakeholders, you will develop and maintain secure, automated, and highly available data services. Technologies used may include AWS cloud services, orchestration platforms, SQL and NoSQL databases, event streaming tools, and CI/CD pipelines to deliver robust, mission-aligned solutions. Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience serving as a Technical Lead on Information Technology (IT) projects
  • Experience in data engineering or DataOps, including designing and implementing scalable data pipelines
  • Experience with SDLC processes, Agile methodologies, version control, and release management
  • Experience building, deploying, and maintaining ETL or ELT pipelines in cloud or hybrid environments
  • Experience in PL/SQL and at least one programming or scripting language such as Python, Java, or Bash
  • Experience with relational databases, data lakes, or NoSQL storage solutions
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AWS services such as S3, Glue, Lambda, RDS, Redshift, EMR, Kinesis, or Step Functions
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or AWS Managed Workflows
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Experience with containerized environments, including Docker or Kubernetes
  • Experience supporting DataOps capabilities, including observability, lineage, metadata management, and pipeline monitoring
  • Knowledge of data validation, quality checks, and automation for data workflows
  • Ability to assess existing data systems and design integration points, ingestion patterns, and pipeline improvements
