Stantec’s Power System Studies Center of Excellence is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to be a Technical Lead in Electromagnetic Transient Power System Studies (EMT). The Technical Lead will oversee a team of engineers in the execution of EMT studies for various power systems including generation, transmission, and distribution levels, and with different types of generation including renewables and energy storage. The execution of EMT studies will also have an emphasis on the simulation and analysis of HVDC and other power electronic and inverter-based resource (IBR) systems. Besides managing and overseeing a strong technical team in the day-to-day delivery of studies, this position is also responsible for leading business development, client relations and technical proposal preparation in the area of EMT and other power system studies. The Technical Lead also plays a key role in helping set the strategic direction for the power system studies team by keeping up to date with current and emerging industry trends and directions in HVDC and IBR control and protection design and simulation including the participation in various IEEE and CIGRE working groups.

Requirements

  • Expert level of experience in power system studies with emphasis on EMT analysis with strong background in static and dynamic modelling of HVDC converters, static var compensators, STATCOMS and other power electronic devices.
  • Expert user of PSCAD and other EMT software applications.
  • Strong background in other power system analysis software including PSSE, PSLF, ASPEN, ETAP, CYME, DSATools, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, etc.
  • Experience interacting with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to get things done on-time and within the project deadlines while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Self-motivated collaborator that can also work as a successful independent researcher.
  • Self-starter able to work independently with minimal or no supervision and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and provide creative, quick and reliable solutions to complex problems.
  • Expert understanding of North American power systems, associated standards and regulations such as NERC TPL standards.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
  • Willingness to travel within the country and internationally as required.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng and/or PE) is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as an electrical engineer, with focus on EMT studies for generation and transmission, renewable energy, battery storage, and HVDC and other power electronic and inverter-based resource (IBR) systems.

  • International experience completing power system planning studies is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct project leadership on EMT power system studies projects.
  • Develop study methodologies, prepare models and project study cases, analyze simulation results, identify system issues and possible mitigation strategies, and prepare and review study reports.
  • Meet with clients to report on project progress, interim and final study results.
  • Provide technical support to projects in the areas of AC and DC transmission system design and operation.
  • Ensure high quality project deliverables are prepared in a timely manner, to meet project schedules and budgets.
  • Assign resources to projects to provide high quality on time delivery of results.
  • Participate in corporate marketing and business development activities related to power system studies with an emphasis on EMT analysis.
  • Prepare proposals including development of methodology, staffing requirements and labor and expense cost estimates.
  • Manage client relations with respect to business development activities and work assignments.
  • Manage research and development activities associated with power system studies and new technologies and/or innovative study techniques, modelling and simulation.
  • Grow and develop a network of industry connections within the power system global community.
  • Participate in IEEE, CIGRE, IEC or other international organizations.
  • Write papers and give presentations at technical conferences.
  • Provide technical advice, guidance, and mentorship to technical team members.
  • Provide input regarding technical training requirements and opportunities.
  • Stay up to date on the latest simulation tools and techniques used within the industry.
