About The Position

The Technical Lead Engineer - Gearbox is responsible for the design, development, and technical support of wind turbine gearboxes and related components as well as assemblies, with a focus on mechanical performance, reliability, durability, and manufacturability. This role applies engineering principles to evaluate design requirements, develop robust technical solutions, and support the introduction of new or improved gearbox designs for wind turbine applications. The Technical Lead Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams and respected suppliers to resolve technical issues, support product validation and testing, and ensure that designs meet applicable standards, customer expectations, and business objectives. A key responsibility of the role is the integration of the gearbox into the overall wind turbine power train, requiring strong technical leadership, systems thinking, and close coordination across engineering interfaces. The position also requires a thorough understanding of the operating demands and reliability requirements of wind energy applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years' experience in mechanical design and development, preferably involving wind turbine gearboxes, drivetrain systems, rotating equipment, or similar complex assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of gearbox design principles, mechanical analysis, and design verification methods.
  • Knowledge of power train systems and interface integration within wind turbine applications.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, technical specifications, and industry standards.
  • 8+ years' experience working with suppliers in a technical development or problem-solving capacity.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Experience supporting testing, validation, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems or products.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and with external partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Proficiency in engineering design tools and analysis methods relevant to mechanical and gearbox design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and technical support of wind turbine gearbox components and assemblies.
  • Define and evaluate gearbox design requirements in alignment with product, system, and customer expectations.
  • Perform engineering calculations, technical analyses, and design verification activities to ensure robust performance and reliability.
  • Support the integration of the gearbox into the overall wind turbine power train, ensuring proper interface management and system compatibility.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including systems engineering, manufacturing, quality, program management, and service organizations.
  • Work in close partnership with respected suppliers to support component development, technical issue resolution, and design execution.
  • Review technical drawings, specifications, standards, and design documentation to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Support product validation, testing, and troubleshooting efforts to identify and resolve design-related issues.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and drive corrective actions for technical, production, or field issues.
  • Drive design improvements that enhance reliability, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design gates, and release processes.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentoring to engineering team members as needed.
  • Ensure design solutions are aligned with wind turbine operational demands and long-term reliability expectations.
