About The Position

Under general supervision, the Technical Laboratory Coordinator serves as a student educator and supervisor for the mechanical engineering department in the mechanical engineering machine shop, as well as the mechanical engineering rapid prototyping studio. This role involves instructing and supervising mechanical engineering students on the safe use of equipment and providing assistance to staff, faculty, and students regarding the fabrication of parts. The position also includes fabricating, maintaining, and repairing metal parts, tools, and equipment. This role is focused on face-to-face education and supervision of students and operates primarily during evenings and weekend hours.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Three years of related experience in laboratory operations.
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to perform mathematical computations.
Ability to read engineering drawings and sketches.
Willingness to work primarily during evenings and weekend hours.
Ability to work with college-age students and demonstrate patience and empathy for untrained individuals.

Responsibilities

Leads training sessions for mechanical engineering students on manual shop equipment, CNC machines, and related software.
Provides technical assistance and instructional support to students, staff, and faculty in the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio.
Performs semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature.
Manufactures parts from steel, aluminum, or other materials from drawings, prints, or from verbal instruction to a required tolerance.
Manufactures parts consisting of gears, all makes of threads, shafts, adaptors, jigs, and fixtures to very close tolerances.
Provides support to laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on lab equipment.
Other duties as assigned
