You will have global responsibilities working for Ford Motor Company leading Gear Design, Development and Release as the go to technical expert. This group is responsible for all automatic step ratio transmissions, hybrids as well as leading the gear design future for BEV Power Unit applications. As a technical lead you will be responsible for the gear tooth definition to achieve best in class performance for power density, durability, NVH, cost, and efficiency. You will be interacting with gear prototype operations, gear manufacturing, systems engineering, and vehicle NVH to achieve these goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering
  • 8+ years of experience with gear and spline design and bringing those products to market
  • Demonstrated experience in planetary carrier, needle bearings, and planet washer designs
  • Experience designing components employing Powder Metal alloys, stampings, forgings, laser welding, and material staking features
  • Proven record of teamwork with related geartrain engineering team to optimize bearing pre-loads, press fits, lube budget, stiffness
  • Effective knowledge of gear and spline manufacturing process, metallurgy and heat treatment
  • Self-directed, excellent people and communications skills
  • Be able to lead a diverse team from many organizations to resolve issues
  • Proficient in LTCA (such as OSU LDP)
  • Fluent in reading/interpreting gear chart and quality data

Nice To Haves

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10+ years of gear design
  • Gear manufacturing and Gear NVH resolution experience
  • Gear tool design (Dontyne or the like) and prototype manufacturing experience
  • Advanced problem solving skill (Black Belt Certified preferred)
  • Published Technical Paper(s)
  • Proficient in Multi-body System software (Romax, T3D)
  • INCOSE CSEP certification or equivalent preferred
  • Versed in UML and SysML modeling languages preferred
  • Model based system engineering development utilizing MagicDraw/3DX toolkit preferred

Responsibilities

  • Primarily designing parallel axis gearing as related to layshaft and planetary gear sets for automatic transmissions, E power units, and hybrid applications
  • Perform gear and spline hardware reviews and assessments throughout the development process
  • Lead problem solving investigations to resolve durability and NVH concerns
  • Optimize gear mesh losses while maintaining durability and NVH robustness
  • Design and/or review and sign-off gear designs, macro and micro geometries utilizing a combination of in house, Ohio State University and commercial programs (LDP, Romax, T3D)
  • Signoff responsibility for gear and spline components/assemblies at program milestones. Author, review and approve all FMA documentation (DVP, Boundary, DFMEA, Design Rules etc.)
  • Lead material testing to develop S/N curves for bending, pitting and tooth flank fatigue
  • Mentoring and training all things gearing and splines
  • Collaborate with industry experts
  • Work with manufacturing engineering on gear/spline design and process feasibility studies
  • Develop and implement new design process methodologies and analytical tools
