About The Position

Mondo Robot is a digital experience and engineering studio seeking a Technical Director. This is a senior engineering leadership role within the company, responsible for architecture, the engineering team, client relationships, internal AI tooling, and the evolution of their proprietary AI-powered system called OS. The role involves hands-on leadership, staying connected to code, and collaborating with clients and internal teams. The Technical Director will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining technical standards for shippable and maintainable work. This position is part of a broader integrated agency network with offices globally.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional experience building for the web.
• At least 3 years of experience managing engineers.
• Deep experience with composable, API-first (MACH) architectures, including headless CMS, commerce, and third-party integrations.
• Baseline requirement for Accessibility (A11Y) and internationalization (i18n/l10n).
• Hands-on experience shipping for large brands, understanding their tech needs, procurement, and IT teams.
• Demonstrated experience building AI-enabled products, platforms, tools, or production workflows.
• Strong understanding of agentic architectures, LLM orchestration, tool use, APIs, and AI-enabled developer workflows.
• Ability to move between technical strategy, rapid prototyping, architecture, and production engineering.
• Comfort operating in environments where technology and requirements are evolving simultaneously.
• Experience using LLMs and GenAI in production.
• Experience building or managing internal AI tooling.
• Agency or consulting background with experience managing multiple client projects concurrently.
• Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written), particularly explaining technical decisions to non-technical audiences.
• Proven track record of leading and mentoring teams and creating a positive, productive atmosphere.
• Comfortable interacting with clients, including their CTOs and IT teams, and able to articulate reasons for saying no.
• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working across an integrated agency network or a shared-services setup.
• Cloud infrastructure depth (AWS, hosting platforms, large data migrations, cost optimization).
• Familiarity with ERP or enterprise system integrations (NetSuite or similar).
• Experience building award-winning sites and/or mobile apps.
• A product excellence mindset (quantified by user reviews, strong adoption growth, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Communicate and represent engineering as the tech ambassador, translating complex technical ideas for various stakeholders.
• Present technical roadmaps, progress, and risks to senior leadership and clients.
• Build strong working relationships with client engineering teams, external vendors, and partners.
• Participate in agency leadership discussions regarding positioning, services, and engineering investment.
• Own architecture and stack decisions for concurrent projects, focusing on composable, API-first (MACH) systems.
• Review scopes, estimates, and technical approaches before client presentation.
• Act as the technical voice in pitches, kickoffs, and client discussions regarding scope changes.
• Evaluate scale, security, privacy, accessibility, latency, and cost in architecture decisions and explain tradeoffs.
• Manage the integration of third-party and client-side systems (ERPs, CRMs, commerce platforms, cloud services).
• Lead the vision, architecture, and roadmap for the OS, Mondo Robot’s AI-powered system.
• Develop emerging AI capabilities into practical, reusable tools, agents, workflows, and services.
• Own the roadmap for the agency's internal AI tooling, including Claude Skills, MCP connectors, and agentic workflows.
• Determine what AI capabilities get built, bought, integrated, or retired, establishing standards for security, data, cost, and governance.
• Collaborate with Creative, Product, Strategy, and Engineering leadership to identify OS improvements.
• Productize successful OS capabilities for reuse across projects.
• Integrate the OS model into pitches, prototypes, and client conversations.
• Stay current on AI advancements (LLMs, agentic architectures, etc.) and translate them into practical decisions.
• Delegate build work for OS components and ensure accountability for their usefulness, maintenance, and adoption.
• Manage a team of three engineers (Architect, Senior Engineer, Senior Creative Engineer), including 1:1s, reviews, and growth plans.
• Own and utilize the engineering ladder to define career paths for engineers.
• Serve as the primary technical problem-solver for the team, knowing when to guide and when to remove barriers.
• Foster an environment for high performance through clear expectations, honest feedback, and recognition.
• Manage multiple projects to ensure they are on time, within scope, and on budget.
• Jump into code when necessary for project needs while also maintaining a strategic overview.
• Own code review standards, deployment practices, accessibility, performance, and security across projects.
• Identify and communicate technical risks with proposed solutions.
• Collaborate with product, design, strategy, and account teams to ensure technical work aligns with project goals.
• Provide technical leadership on integrated client engagements with sister agencies (Unfold and PBM).
• Handle technical needs such as vendor evaluations, RFP assessments, and account/access audits.
