About The Position

The John Carroll School seeks an experienced and visionary Technical Director to lead and support the technical execution of its Performing Arts Program, College Preparatory Dance Program, and school-wide events. Reporting to the Chair of the Performing Arts Department, this individual will oversee all aspects of theater and dance production and facility operations while fostering a student-centered, hands-on learning environment. This position can be either part-time or full-time. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled technical theater professional who is passionate about education and eager to contribute to a thriving, collaborative arts community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater, Theater Production, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in technical theater (4+ years preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise in lighting, sound, scenic construction, and stage management.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with technical theater tools, software, and production technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience at the secondary level preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all technical aspects of theatrical and dance productions, performances, and major school events.
  • Plan and manage production timelines, build schedules, and facility usage.
  • Oversee the design and execution of scenic, lighting, sound, and audiovisual elements.
  • Maintain and manage theater facilities, equipment, and inventory.
  • Supervise construction processes, ensuring safety, efficiency, and high artistic standards.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and technical partners.
  • Provide on-site technical support for rehearsals, performances, and events, including evenings and weekends.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and innovations in technical theater.
  • Teach courses such as Theatre Design & Production, Stage Management, and advanced independent study offerings.
  • Mentor and supervise students involved in technical theater and stage crew.
  • Cultivate a collaborative and inclusive environment that encourages creativity, leadership, and skill development.
  • Inspire student engagement through experiential, project-based learning.
  • Ensure all technical operations meet safety standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and implement safety protocols and training for students and staff.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional theater environment.
