About The Position

Bring your passion for technical theater, student mentorship, and collaborative production work to St. Mark’s as we create meaningful and ambitious theatrical experiences for our community. This is a seasonal, part-time position. We are open to hiring a candidate for one or both production seasons. The Technical Director plays a vital role in mentoring students while helping bring productions to life in ways that are safe, thoughtful, and artistically compelling. Requirements

  • Demonstrate strong technical theater knowledge, including lighting, sound, set construction, and backstage operations
  • Bring experience managing or supporting theatrical productions and technical crews
  • Exhibit a teaching-first mindset with patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm for working with students of varying experience levels
  • Model strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety and best practices in technical theater environments
  • Collaborate enthusiastically with students and colleagues in a creative and fast-paced setting
  • Maintain composure, professionalism, and adaptability during live productions and technical rehearsals
  • Previous experience in technical theater, including lighting and sound operation, required
  • Set construction experience and working knowledge of shop safety and OSHA standards required
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends during production periods
  • Ability to sit or stand uninterrupted for 30-minute periods
  • Ability to regularly stand, sit, crouch, kneel, and work alongside students
  • Ability to frequently carry and lift moderately heavy items, approximately 25–70 pounds
  • Comfort climbing stairs and ladders, using lifts, and working at heights
  • Ability to maintain focus and composure in an energetic, fast-paced, and occasionally loud environment

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Experience in educational theater settings preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Theater Director and students to design and execute sets that are artistically ambitious, safe, and achievable within budget and venue constraints
  • Lead the setup, troubleshooting, and operation of lighting, sound, and special effects for theatrical productions
  • Ensure all scenic elements are structurally sound, movable, and compatible with the performance space
  • Teach and mentor students in the safe and effective use of tools, construction techniques, painting, and rigging
  • Train student crews in lighting and sound board operation, backstage procedures, and technical theater best practices
  • Support and train student Stage Managers in cueing, calling, and production management
  • Lead and supervise student Stage Crew during technical rehearsals and live performances
  • Coordinate set builds, technical rehearsals, and production logistics in collaboration with the Theater Director
  • Oversee student crews responsible for costumes, props, run crew responsibilities, scene changes, and special effects
  • Coordinate the strike of sets and restoration of theater spaces following productions
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and collaborative backstage environment
  • Participate in evening and weekend rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and performances as required by the production schedule
