Technical Communications Manager

SonarAustin, TX

About The Position

As Technical Communications Manager at Sonar, you will own the bridge between deep product expertise and compelling public narrative. This is a rare role built for someone who understands how software gets built, has lived inside product marketing, and wants to use that fluency to shape how we communicate the Sonar narrative through our marketing campaigns, brand, and communications functions. You will lead all product-related storytelling for our communications function — translating complex technical capabilities into narratives that land with engineers, developers, and technical decision-makers. You are the connective tissue between our technical PMMs and the communications, social, and brand teams, ensuring that what we build gets told with precision, context, and resonance. You think in campaigns. You understand the full marketing journey and the customer experience from awareness to advocacy. You are deeply community-minded and know that the most powerful communications today happen in the channels where developers actually live: forums, open-source threads, social feeds, and technical communities. This role will shape how Sonar earns credibility and trust in those spaces.

Requirements

  • Hands-On AI & Development Experience: You have built with AI tools, shipped product, or worked closely enough with engineering teams that you can speak with genuine fluency about how developers think, what they care about, and what earns their trust. This isn't a background requirement — it's a credibility requirement.
  • PMM Foundation: You are likely a Product Marketing Manager today — or have been recently — with a strong pull toward communications, community, writing, and social. You understand positioning, messaging, competitive context, and launch strategy, and you want to deploy that foundation in service of a broader communications mandate.
  • Campaign Architecture: You think in arcs, not assets. You understand how a message evolves across the customer journey, how awareness connects to consideration, and how to design a communications program that compounds over time.
  • Community Fluency: You understand developer communities — not just how to post in them, but how to contribute to them. You know the difference between marketing to a community and earning a place in one.
  • Technical Writing & Storytelling: You can make complex things clear without dumbing them down. Your writing is precise, your point of view is earned, and you understand that the best technical storytelling respects the intelligence of the reader.
  • AI-First Content Approach: You use AI tools as a natural part of your workflow — not as a shortcut, but as a multiplier. You understand how AI-generated and LLM-indexed content affects brand discoverability and you design for it.
  • 5+ Years in B2B Tech: Experience working with technical brands — ideally in developer tools, security, or AI — with a track record of creating content that resonates with engineering and technical decision-maker audiences.
  • Agility & Autonomy: You can manage multiple workstreams, make informed decisions independently, and collaborate across teams without needing the path to be perfectly lit. You are a builder.

Responsibilities

  • Own Product Storytelling: Serve as the primary communications owner for product-related narratives. Partner closely with technical PMMs to translate product launches, feature updates, and technical differentiation into stories that resonate with developer and technical buyer audiences.
  • Bridge PMM and Communications: Act as the connective link between product marketing and the broader communications function. Ensure that technical depth and product context flow seamlessly into PR, social, internal communications, and brand content.
  • Campaign-Minded Execution: Develop and execute integrated communications campaigns that map to the full customer journey — from awareness through consideration to retention and advocacy. Think beyond individual assets to the arc of how a message builds over time.
  • Community Engagement: Build and deepen Sonar's presence in developer communities, technical forums, and open-source ecosystems. Understand how trust is earned in these spaces and what it takes to show up with credibility rather than noise.
  • Social Media & Technical Voice: Support and contribute to our social media presence with content that speaks authentically to technical audiences. Bring an AI-first approach to content development, with a clear understanding of how LLM-first search and discoverability affect brand visibility.
  • Content & Thought Leadership: Write and develop technical content — blogs, bylines, launch narratives, developer guides — that positions Sonar as an expert voice in code quality, security, and the AI-augmented development workflow.
  • Performance & Measurement: Track and report on the performance of product communications and campaigns. Use data to optimize messaging, assess resonance with technical audiences, and demonstrate impact.
