About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of the Cole Auditorium, the Technical Assistant will provide assistance in operations of the stage and other areas of the facility. This role involves supervising, setting up, aiding with the run of shows, and striking events. The Assistant will also be responsible for scheduling, training, supervising, and working with part-time technical stage crew. Additionally, the Technical Assistant may act as Manager on Duty, overseeing the box office, ensuring front of house safety and effectiveness, and meeting customer needs. The position requires demonstrating and supervising the safe handling of production components, assisting with stage rigging, fly systems, and suspended equipment, and being able to fill any role on the technical stage crew or facility support staff. This includes operating spotlights, communication systems, audio consoles, and lighting consoles. The role also involves aiding with load-outs, pre- and post-event restorations, designing lighting and sound, reading technical drawings, and acting as stage manager for shows. Maintaining the stage and preparatory areas for safety and operational functions, inspecting and maintaining production equipment, and making simple repairs are also key responsibilities. The Technical Assistant must also maintain the security of private areas and ensure compliance with all relevant policies, regulations, and industry standards. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Good communication skills and ability to deal effectively with college staff, vendors, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of current trends in sound, stage, and audiovisual equipment and the maintenance of production equipment.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, catwalks, fly lofts, and at heights above 50 feet (catwalks and ladders).
  • Ability to lift/carry 50+ pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull equipment, including fly rail.
  • Computer skills.
  • A valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to identify methods, opportunities, and solutions to meet or exceed business needs.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Three years professional experience in theatre productions required (technical production, including scenery, lighting, sound, rigging, and electrics).

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge running Yamaha LS-9 Sound Console and ETC Element Lighting board a plus.
  • Working knowledge of InDesign, AutoCad, QLab, iRFR classic, iRFR BTS, Yamaha LS9 Stagemix, Garage Band, Dante and/or other as software/apps associated with sound, light, and stage design preferred.
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre or theatre-related field preferred.
  • Five+ years of professional experience in theatre productions preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, set-up, aid with run of show, and strike of events held in the facility.
  • Schedule, train, supervise, and work with technical stage crew (part-time, as needed crew).
  • Act as Manager on Duty as needed in the absence of the Assistant Directors and Director; manning box office, ensuring front of house is running safely and effectively, and customer needs are met.
  • Demonstrate and supervise the safe and proper handling of all production components.
  • Assist with stage rigging, fly system (counter-weight fly system), trusses, curtains, and suspended equipment, following all safety standards.
  • Fill the role of any position on the technical stage crew or facility support staff, to include operation of spotlights, stage management communication system, audio console, and lighting console.
  • Aid positions in load-out and pre- and post-event restorations.
  • Design and coordinate lighting and sound designs as needed.
  • Read blue line prints of the facility and of light, sound, and staging production drawings and technical riders.
  • Run annual and rehearsed shows as stage manager, acting as chief supervisor for technical stage crew when needed.
  • Maintain stage and all preparatory areas for highest safety, operational, and presentational functions.
  • Assist in inspecting, maintaining production equipment and building systems and make simple repairs.
  • Maintain private areas of the building for highest level of safety and security, ensuring compliance with all college policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulations, and industry standards.
