About The Position

People Can Fly is seeking a Technical Artist to support cross-discipline pipelines in a tool-driven game-development environment. The role requires basic rigging knowledge and Python scripting, along with the ability to build robust Maya/MotionBuilder tools and scripts. The artist will work with stakeholders on rigging, shaders, and workflows, raise risks and solutions early, and validate pipelines directly in game builds. The role balances artistic quality with scalable workflows across asset archetypes, including conversion of legacy assets. The Technical Artist maintains artistic direction and quality across materials, shaders, and assets; creates final materials for characters, environments, and effects; and supports existing material systems. They develop efficient pipelines and tools for art and design teams, research techniques to improve asset quality and performance, and collaborate with Art, Animation, Design, and Engineering to resolve pipeline and asset issues. The role also involves automation, procedural workflows, asset debugging and profiling, technical feedback, documentation, and mentoring other artists.

Requirements

  • Strong portfolio showcasing AAA-quality work in an engine, whether proprietary, Unreal, or Unity.
  • Excellent knowledge of industry-standard DCC tools such as Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter/Designer, Photoshop, or equivalents.
  • Proficiency in Python scripting, including PyQt/PySide, and ability to write clean, reusable, maintainable code.
  • Comfort building Maya or engine plug-ins, writing extensible pipelines, and bridging legacy and modern formats.
  • Experience supporting automation in retargeting, material rebaking, tessellation, and mesh optimization pipelines.
  • Knowledge of modern rendering techniques and procedural workflows; comfort debugging shaders and shader inheritance and profiling runtime.
  • Good knowledge of shader languages such as HLSL/GLSL and rendering techniques.
  • Understanding of 3D mathematics, topology best practices, PBR workflows, and optimization strategies.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
  • More than 3 years of industry experience, including at least one shipped title.
  • Proficiency in English, as the role involves regular communication with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders based outside Québec.
  • Basic rigging knowledge and Python scripting.
  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders, surface risks and propose solutions early, and validate pipelines in game builds independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Houdini, MotionBuilder, or other procedural tools.
  • Familiarity with C++ and Maya/OpenMaya plug-in development.
  • Knowledge of modern rendering pipelines, particle systems, cloth/physics simulations, and lighting.
