About The Position

HG Law LLP (HG) is a full-service Intellectual Property law firm with offices in New York City, San Jose and London. We specialize in building patent portfolios that impact and drive our client’s business. Our clients, who come to us from a vast array of engineering sectors, have come to rely on HG’s technical know-how and understanding to support their success. In January 2027, HG will merge with Lathrop GPM, bringing together the strengths of both firms and further expanding Lathrop’s Intellectual Property Practice. Candidates selected for this position will join Lathrop GPM in 2027 as Technical Advisors within the combined Intellectual Property team. We are seeking talented engineers to join our New York or San Jose office as Technical Advisors. In this apprenticeship-style role, Technical Advisors work closely with experienced patent attorneys, applying their technical backgrounds and problem-solving skills to understand cutting-edge innovations and help clients protect their intellectual property worldwide. This is an excellent opportunity for engineers interested in exploring a career in intellectual property law. No previous legal training or experience is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, applied physics, or a related technical field
  • Must be eligible to become a registered patent agent before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Excellent academic record.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to quickly learn new technologies
  • A strong drive and willingness to own projects and see them to completion.
  • Ability to work in person in our NY or SJ Office

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree or relevant industry experience is preferred.
  • Background in telecommunications, semiconductors, circuit design (analog or digital) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Confer with inventors about their inventions and how best to protect their innovation.
  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications.
  • Analyze complex technologies and develop a deep understanding of clients’ inventions.
  • Assist clients to assert their IP rights against infringers.
  • Defend clients from improper assertion of third parties’ rights.
  • Defend client patents against third party challenges.
  • Conduct competitive landscape analyses.
