Technical Accounting and Internal Controls Lead

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is hiring a senior individual contributor and hands-on builder to lead technical accounting and establish and operate a management-owned internal controls capability. The role will turn the existing controls roadmap into documented, operating, and sustainable controls; resolve complex accounting matters; and build the discipline needed for efficient audits, scalable growth, and long-term public-company readiness. The role owns the controls program and its risk-based roadmap, governance, annual plan, issue log, remediation cadence, and management reporting. It defines and refreshes the scope and accountability of the controls environment, builds durable documentation, drives remediation and readiness, and prepares priority processes for operating-effectiveness testing and future SOX requirements. As Accounting’s technical lead, this person researches and documents U.S. GAAP conclusions for complex or unusual transactions and translates them into policies, journal-entry treatment, disclosures, processes, and controls. The role partners across Accounting, FP&A, Legal, IT, People, Supply Chain, and program teams, including during ERP and other finance-system implementations. It also serves as a primary liaison to external auditors and specialized advisors while retaining internal ownership of decisions, evidence standards, and execution. The position is based in a facility that may contain industrial hazards, and extended activities such as typing, standing, sitting, and walking are required. Occasional nights, weekends, or on-call work may be needed during payroll processing, month-end close, audits, compliance deadlines, system issues, or urgent operational escalations. The salary range is $142,000–$177,000 per year, plus equity and benefits; actual salary depends on level, location, qualifications, and experience. This role requires compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws, and any offer is contingent on that compliance.

  • Active CPA required.

  • Experience building or materially advancing a controls program in a high-growth, pre-IPO, newly public, or complex public-company environment.
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, COSO, financial statement assertions, and ICFR design and evaluation.
  • Ability to write clear, defensible accounting memoranda; apply pragmatic, risk-based judgment; influence without direct authority; communicate clearly; and drive work end to end while balancing rigor with business needs.
  • Ability to perform extended activities such as typing, standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information is required.
