This role is an opportunity to join Abby Care in solving one of the most important challenges of our time. Abby Care is building an AI-native operating system for home-based care, spanning caregiver and patient intake, care delivery, billing, and compliance. They are looking for an Applied AI Technical Lead to own the technical direction and delivery of a major Applied AI problem area. Reporting to the Director of Applied AI, this role will lead a team of engineers in building production systems that automate complex healthcare workflows. Depending on the area of ownership, these systems may determine intake qualification, interpret clinical documents, prepare prior authorization packets, assist caregivers and clinicians, coordinate operational work, or identify cases requiring human judgment. This is a senior individual-contributor leadership role where the candidate will set technical direction, lead execution, mentor engineers, and remain deeply hands-on in architecture and implementation. This is a full-time hybrid role based in San Francisco, with four days per week in person.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, machine learning, or Applied AI.
• Demonstrated experience technically leading the delivery of AI-powered products or platforms.
• Strong hands-on experience with language models, agent architectures, retrieval, tool use, structured outputs, and evaluation.
• Experience building systems over complex, incomplete, or unstructured real-world data.
• Strong software engineering and system-design fundamentals, including backend systems, APIs, distributed systems, and data modeling.
• Experience defining evaluation methodologies and production monitoring for probabilistic systems.
• Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
• Strong product judgment and ability to move from ambiguous problems to measurable outcomes.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with fine-tuning, post-training, reinforcement learning, synthetic data, knowledge graphs, workflow engines, or state machines.
• Experience in healthcare, fintech, insurance, or another regulated and operations-intensive industry.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and roadmap for a major Applied AI domain.
• Translate ambiguous healthcare and operational problems into production-ready AI systems.
• Architect and build agentic systems that reason over complex information, use internal tools, and execute workflows end to end.
• Lead engineers through system design, implementation, evaluation, launch, and iteration.
• Establish human-in-the-loop controls based on confidence, risk, reversibility, and regulatory requirements.
• Build reusable capabilities for retrieval, orchestration, tool use, structured outputs, tracing, and feedback.
• Define evaluation datasets, quality metrics, release thresholds, and production monitoring.
• Partner closely with Product, Clinical, Operations, Analytics, and platform teams.
• Mentor senior and junior engineers and raise the technical bar across the organization.
• Contribute directly to architecture, prototyping, code, and critical production systems.
