About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Professional, provides personal care to patients in the hospital, ranging from infant to geriatric ages. This role involves a combination of patient care responsibilities, clerical duties, and phlebotomy. The individual must be able to understand and carry out instructions, recognize problems, and take appropriate reporting actions based on sound judgment. Effective communication, time management, and proficiency in basic academic skills are essential. The role also requires adherence to hospital and safety policies, observation of patient conditions, and assistance to team members.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certification as Nursing Assistant or equivalent desired.
CPR Certification.
Must be able to perform clerical responsibilities, patient care responsibilities, and phlebotomy.
Ability to apply understandings to carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to recognize problems and take reporting action based upon sound judgment.
Reading and writing skills required.
Speaking skills required.
Basic addition and subtraction skills required.
Demonstrates proficiency in cognitive and psychomotor skills required for job performance.
Exercises good time management skills and maintains productive use of time.
Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
Standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Some exposure to communicable disease or bodily fluids.

Responsibilities

Provides personal care to patients, including undressing, assisting with elimination, and aiding with activities such as turning, positioning, standing, pivoting, sitting, ambulating, and transporting patients.
Assists with activities of daily living.
Assists with the completion and collection of patient menus, and passes and collects food trays.
Feeds patients as necessary and records meal intake.
Ensures proper equipment and supplies are used, reports broken equipment or unsafe conditions, and follows maintenance checklists.
Assists with stocking and cleaning supply areas and nutrition stations.
Performs all procedures and conducts self according to hospital and safety policies and procedures.
Answers patient call-lights quickly.
Assists in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
Observes patient condition and reports any untoward signs, symptoms, or unusual occurrences immediately.
Assists other team members with completion of duties and seeks assistance when needed.
Assists with the collection and transport of lab specimens.
Retrieves blood/blood products from the lab and supplies/equipment from CS.
Performs selected patient treatments under the direction of the RN, such as enemas, sitz baths, and application of ice packs or K-pads.
May perform technical skills for which competence may be verified, including EKG (12 Lead & remote monitors), insertion of Foley catheter (care & specimens), BBG, peripheral venipuncture, saline lock starts (flushed by licensed staff), and postmortem care.
Performs clerical duties at the nurse’s station, including answering intercoms and disseminating information.
Relays pertinent information to appropriate nursing personnel.
Assembles and maintains medical records according to hospital policy.
Orders and records supplies in a timely manner.
Maintains effective and efficient computer skills.
Routinely performs phlebotomy duties.
Keeps the charge nurse informed of routine and unusual events.
Assists with the peer evaluation process as requested.
Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
