About The Position

This role involves assuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, and supporting the financial development of the department. The Team Leader provides direct oversight and training to technician staff for daily operations, maintains departmental equipment and systems, and participates in pharmaceutical inventory. They also engage in departmental and hospital committees, provide training for new employees, and coordinate employee schedules. Leadership responsibilities include modeling expected behavior, performance management, acting as a working advisor, providing direction and training, coordinating staffing, delegating work, preparing schedules, and demonstrating fiscal responsibility. The role also assists management with operational planning, IT technology, reporting, and investigations related to adverse drug events, incidents, and drug diversions. Specific areas of responsibility and accountability will be determined by departmental needs.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed or qualify for pharmacy technician license in the State of Indiana. Employment is contingent upon eligibility and completion of licensure within 30 days of employment.
  • Requires Certified Pharmacy Technician designation.
  • Must not have any records or convictions involving any form of chemical dependency, felony, or any adverse actions pending by any Board of Pharmacy.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies and procedures and government regulations.
  • Ability to write and ability to convey clinical notes electronically.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers and staff.
  • Ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to calculate creatinine clearances and pharmacokinetic/nutrition support dosing calculations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an expansive variety of written and electronic information including but not limited to physician orders, journals, lab values and culture and sensitivity reports.
  • Ability to enter data electronically, retrieve data, assemble and organize data.
  • Ability to use and analyze data and ability to integrate diverse sources of data.
  • Knowledge of generic and trade pharmaceutical names.
  • Knowledge of Latin names, authorized abbreviations and chemical symbols for all common medications.
  • Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measures.
  • Knowledge of medications dosages for infants, children, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Considerable initiative and judgment required to evaluate appropriateness and cost effectiveness of drug therapy and to make appropriate recommendations to physicians and health care providers to reach desired patient outcomes.
  • Works under limited supervision as well as provides direction to staff to accomplish the daily responsibilities of the department.
  • Handling multiple priorities, making decisions under pressure, working in close proximity to others and/or in a distracted environment, managing anger/fear/hostility, managing stress appropriately, working with others effectively, and working alone effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Higher education and training is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy preferred.
  • Experience with direct supervision preferred but is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assures personal and departmental compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards including ASHP, HFAP, OSHA, ISBOP, ISDOH, FDA, DEA, USP and EPA.
  • Contributes to the quality improvement of the department and/or organization by: Participating on a quality improvement team; Identifying improvement strategies for the department/organization, including potential cost savings.
  • Contributes to the performance improvement of the department by: Acting as a resource for students or residents as qualified, and/or training new staff.
  • Contributes to the financial development of the department and/or organization.
  • Demonstrates immediate oversight and training to technician staff to accomplish the daily operations of the department.
  • Operates and maintains Departmental Equipment.
  • Maintains Departmental Systems and Records.
  • Participates in inventory of Pharmaceuticals twice annually.
  • Participates in department and hospital committees and quality improvement teams.
  • Provides training/orientation for new employees as needed.
  • Coordinates employee schedules as needed.
  • Models expected behavior for staff.
  • Effectively addresses performance management topics (coaching, appraisals, competency, rewards, development & discipline).
  • Serves as a working advisor for management issues and staffs as necessary to meet the needs of the department.
  • Provides direction and training to staff.
  • Coordinates staffing and delegates work assignments appropriately.
  • Prepares work schedules as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility.
  • Assists the manager and other leads in operational planning, automation and IT technology, clinical and business reporting, adverse drug event, incident and drug diversion investigations.
  • Designations for area of responsibility and accountability will be based upon needs of the department.
