About The Position

Reporting to the Controller, Petline Insurance, this position is a key member of the Petline finance team and is responsible for month-end close, financial and regulatory reporting requirements, banking, accounts payable and expense planning. This role provides opportunities to develop cross functional collaboration between operators, accounting, financial planning, tax and actuarial finance teams as well as exposure to regulatory bodies including Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). In this role you will lead a team of financial analysts to meet the various accounting and reporting requirements, and drive process efficiencies. Leading and mentoring the team, attention to detail and drive to bring progressive changes in a high paced environment will be key to your success in this role. A passion to support financial system improvements will provide an added advantage to the right candidate.

Requirements

  • A CPA accounting designation and 3+ years at supervisory level
  • Understanding of International Financial reporting standards
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Self-starter who can identify opportunities for improvement and execute on them
  • Ability to analyze and understand the implications of business activities on the financial statements
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization and lead a team of finance professionals
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Strong working knowledge of excel and proven experience in process improvement
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada.
  • Background checks (including criminal checks and leadership references).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the month-end close process through journal entries review, complex journal preparation, preparation/review of the Financial Statement package, analytical reviews.
  • Lead the team to deliver regulatory reporting requirements from OSFI, Provincial governments and other regulatory bodies ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Support the implementation of changes in accounting standards when required.
  • Help to develop and maintain accounting policies.
  • Co-ordinate with cross functional business units to gather information for ad hoc requests.
  • Tax remittance approvals, partner with Head Office Tax team for tax entries, preparation of returns and tax audits.
  • Organize staffing for cheque runs, cheque re-orders, vendor set-up approvals.
  • Support cost-centre leaders with their invoice approvals and expense analysis to assist their decision-making process.
  • Responsible for banking function, including deposits, EFT files, monitoring cash balances.
  • Key contact for other banking-related transactions.
  • Lead external and internal audit requirements for the department.
  • Responsible for ensuring controls for regulatory reporting and accounting are in place and effective, including review of monthly account reconciliations.
  • Monthly system validations for server patching.
  • Support the Controller and Petline department leads with OPEX planning during the Budget and Reforecast season.
  • Identify and lead process improvement initiatives within the team through automation or simplification of back-end processes.
  • Drive key projects and strategic initiatives forward by providing thought leadership, and also be ready to deep dive on issues as needed.
  • Ability to lead and mentor a team of finance professionals.
