The Lead Surgical/Sterile Processing Technician ensures the proper operation of all sterilizer units throughout Surgical Services prior to daily use. This role is responsible for running and recording biological and chemical tests at the beginning of the day, inspecting equipment for malfunctions, and reporting issues to management or Biomed. The Lead processes or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to SPD. They work closely with the Manager, assisting with training and in-service education for new and existing employees. The position involves maintaining preventative maintenance procedures and control procedures on all equipment and instrumentation, and assisting the manager with staff scheduling and new employee orientation. Additional duties include examining sterilization/expiration dates, reporting inoperable equipment, conducting visual inventory inspections for adequate stock levels, testing sterilizer effectiveness with spore tests, storing new and reprocessed equipment, and maintaining clean work areas. The role also involves maintaining count sheets and instrument tracking systems, assisting the Manager with monthly productivity statistics, inspecting case carts, instruments, and supplies, and delivering items to the Operating Room. The Surgical Technician I SPD cleans and restocks the Sterile Core. Responsibilities include High Level Disinfection, monitoring and documenting indicator results, following safety procedures, operating equipment safely, preparing and distributing surgical case carts, and storing items appropriately. The role also encompasses performing duties as a Scrub Tech and maintaining current knowledge, certifications, and licensure. The Lead directs other personnel and may be required to remain on campus during severe weather or disasters.
