Team Lead, Engineering

Altana•New York, NY
•$230,000 - $270,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Altana is hiring a Team Lead to guide a small team of 3–4 engineers building its AI-powered product network for trusted trade. The role combines hands-on engineering with team leadership: you will own architecture and quality standards, make day-to-day product and technical decisions, and guide work from customer discovery through launch. You will partner closely with product and design and help turn customer problems and hypotheses into products that are shipped, adopted, and reliable as output grows. The position emphasizes customer outcomes, steady delivery, AI-native development, and operational ownership. You will stay close to customers, plan and sequence work, lead incident response, consider system costs and security, demonstrate the team's work, and coach engineers in partnership with an engineering manager. The role is based in Brooklyn, New York, with hybrid flexibility; candidates must be within commuting distance of the Williamsburg office.

Requirements

  • Professional experience writing back-end or data-driven software in demanding environments.
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills and sound technical judgment, including deploying production code to cloud environments.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and leading engineers on complex projects as a tech lead, project lead, or senior engineer driving a team effort.
  • Track record of working closely with customers, translating their problems into well-scoped shipped work, and delivering incremental releases from prototype to production.
  • Experience running sprint planning and delivery for a team that consistently meets its commitments.
  • Comfort with operations, including incidents, on-call, and system cost.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and judgment about when to decide independently and when to escalate.
  • Experience building production systems with LLMs, agents, evaluations, or retrieval.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience directly managing engineers.
  • Experience using engineering metrics such as DORA or SPACE to improve team practices.
  • Background in trade, supply chain, compliance, or working with government customers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 3–4 engineers while remaining substantially hands-on in engineering.
  • Own the team's architecture and quality standards and review work before it reaches customers.
  • Define customer problems, make tactical product decisions, and own a metric tied to customer outcomes.
  • Engage with customers weekly through calls and session recordings, and identify key friction points.
  • Clarify goals, break ambiguous work into milestones and MVP/GA releases, manage the backlog, and sequence delivery.
  • Use LLMs, agents, evaluations, and retrieval as standard building blocks, and set verification standards for AI-assisted code.
  • Track shared engineering metrics, identify bottlenecks, reduce operational debt, and raise cross-team gaps with leadership.
  • Lead incident response, including a quick-response escalation rotation; account for system costs and flag anomalies with proposed fixes.
  • Uphold security standards in code review and address flagged vulnerabilities quickly.
  • Demonstrate the team's work to customers, the commercial team, and product and engineering leadership.
  • Coach engineers, write reviews, partner with the engineering manager on timely and actionable feedback, interview candidates, and foster an inclusive team environment.
  • Run sprint planning and delivery so the team makes steady progress and meets commitments.
