About The Position

Oversees the daily operation impacting PM&R staff. Primary duties include 75% patient treatment, coordination of educational programs for PT, OT, ST students; teaching; staff development including competency assessment; role modeling for staff; designing and implementing strategic planning and performance improvement in conjunction with the Director of Rehabilitation Services.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation clinical specialties.
  • Licensed by the state of Michigan in the appropriate clinical specialty.
  • One or more years of supervisory experience in healthcare.
  • Able to perform the expectations of a staff therapist by providing cost effective care.
  • Able to submit and interpret basic department specific reports.
  • Understands the billing and reimbursement practices to assist staff with understanding and implementation.
  • Able to guide clinical decision making and mentor appropriate behaviors.
  • Review treatment notes to be aware of patient’s progress and overall rehabilitation, and to insure that therapy prescription is understood and applied.
  • Able to provided formal education and training for new employees, staff, students, and other hospital personnel.
  • Able to coordinate services with other disciplines to ensure effective outcomes.
  • Able to consult with physicians, case managers, and other personnel regarding treatments and schedules for patient’s treatment in accordance with available personnel and equipment.
  • Able to observe and evaluate performance of staff duties in the area of efficiency, skill, abilities, and attitudes toward co-worker and patients, and to use this information to determine effectiveness of methods.
  • Must be willing to direct and supervise student programs, staff, and volunteers.
  • Must be knowledgeable and responsible for development and implementation of performance improvement.
  • Must be knowledgeable of appropriate documentation to identify patient status and maximize reimbursement.
  • Able to guide program development and formulate policies.
  • Understands, supports and participates in marketing activities to promote departmental growth.
  • Must be knowledgeable in providing leadership and sound professional judgment by utilizing continuing education experiences and maintaining active membership in professional organizations.
  • Able to assist in compliance with all JCAHO, state licensing, and hospital requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of staffing patterns that maximize patient outcomes in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Provide effective, outcome related patient care demonstrated through patient/customer satisfaction and goal accomplishment.
  • Documentation must be concise, objective, and legible. Content should meet all reimbursement criteria and accreditation standards.
  • Uses resources in a cost effective manner and assists with budget development.
  • Assists with compliance of all regulatory and reimbursement criteria.
  • Develops the competency plan and ensures completion or corrective action for all staff.
  • Serves as the Clinical Coordinator with all affiliating educational institutions.
  • Monitors the performance improvement plan and makes recommendations for change based on thresholds and problems identified within the department.
  • Communicates the plan to all staff and includes staff input.
  • Fosters teamwork and serves as guide for staff development.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with all staff including physicians and administration.
  • Promotes open communication within the department and facilitates mechanisms to ensure information is shared and received.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of a staff therapist, including walking, standing, sitting, lifting or bending as required to accomplish the principal duties in a safe, reliable manner.
  • Hand dexterity and skills to handle carious tools and equipment including computer use.
  • Able to communicate with staff, patients, physicians, community, etc. requiring hearing and speech ability.
  • Ability to function under a variety of circumstances such as stressed employees, changing patient volumes, changing demands or healthcare system, lack of trained, competent clinical staff and with embarrassing or uncomfortable situations.
