About The Position

The Department of Biology at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is seeking applications from qualified graduate students in the MS Biology program for part-time Teaching Assistant (TA) positions. These roles are available at both the San Bernardino Campus (SBC) and the Palm Desert Campus (PDC). The successful candidates will possess strong organizational and communication skills and a dedication to enhancing student success. Prior teaching experience is recommended but not mandatory. Responsibilities include teaching laboratory or discussion sections, primarily in foundational biology courses such as Introduction to Biology Lab, Principles of Biology I and II, Microbiology for Allied Health Majors, and Human Anatomy and Physiology for Allied Health Majors I and II. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to effectively interact with a diverse student body, including first-generation students, and exhibit a commitment to teamwork with course coordinators and other instructors to ensure equitable instruction across sections. These are temporary appointments within a pool of graduate students considered for teaching assistantships, with decisions made on a rolling basis. Applications submitted at least four months before an academic term are recommended for full consideration.

Requirements

  • Must be "classified" students in the CSUSB Master’s Program in Biology.
  • Must not be on probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades.
  • Must have a command of the subject matter for the course(s) that they will be teaching.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience is recommended.
  • Candidates should have a letter of recommendation from their MS thesis advisor.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued.
  • Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at the program level is preferred and should be noted in the application.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate laboratory or discussion courses in Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Have a command of the subject matter for the course(s) they will be teaching.
  • Provide weekly instruction and supervision of assigned sections/courses.
  • Attend course team meetings.
  • Read and evaluate student papers and other assignments.
  • Proctor examinations.
  • Maintain and submit student records.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.
  • Maintain regular communication with course coordinators.
  • Return graded work promptly.
  • Record grades regularly as appropriate for the course (e.g., in Canvas).
  • Return final section grades by the last day of final exams.
  • Respond to course or departmental-related emails within 48 hours.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.
