About The Position

The Department of Biology at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is seeking part-time graduate student teaching assistant applications for its San Bernardino Campus (SBC) and/or Palm Desert Campus (PDC). This role is for graduate students in the MS Biology program who possess good organizational and communication skills and are driven to enhance student success. Prior teaching experience is recommended but not required. The position involves teaching laboratory or discussion sections, primarily in foundational biology courses such as Introduction to Biology Lab, Principles of Biology I and II, Microbiology for Allied Health Majors, and Human Anatomy and Physiology for Allied Health Majors I and II. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students, and exhibit a commitment to teamwork with course coordinators and other instructors for equitable instruction across sections. This is a pool of graduate students for teaching assistantships, with all appointments being temporary. Decisions are made on a rolling basis, typically several months before and up to the start of the academic term. Applications submitted at least four months before an academic term are recommended for full consideration.

Requirements

  • Must be a "classified" student in the CSUSB Master’s Program in Biology.
  • Must not be on probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience is recommended.
  • Candidates should have a letter of recommendation from their MS thesis advisor.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued.
  • Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at the program level is preferred and should be noted in the application.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate laboratory or discussion courses in Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Have a command of the subject matter for the course(s) they will be teaching.
  • Provide weekly instruction and supervision of assigned sections/courses.
  • Attend course team meetings.
  • Read and evaluate student papers and other assignments.
  • Proctor examinations.
  • Maintain and submit student records.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain regular communication with course coordinators.
  • Return graded work promptly.
  • Record grades regularly as appropriate for the course (e.g., in Canvas).
  • Return final section grades by the last day of final exams.
  • Respond to course or departmental-related emails within 48 hours.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.
