About The Position

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking graduate students for Teaching Associate positions for the 2026-27 Academic Year. Teaching Associates are typically responsible for providing classroom instruction, and this role involves teaching sections of various courses in the Biological Sciences Department. Opportunities may arise to teach other beginning courses. Appointments are conditional based on enrollment and budget, and the department reserves the right to select the most qualified candidate and assign them to appropriate courses. Course offerings may vary due to staff and curriculum changes, and employment from semester to semester is not guaranteed.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive setting.
  • Admitted to the Master Program in the Department of Biological Sciences.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Enrolled in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment.
  • Ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Proof of enrollment in program of graduate study in this department.
  • Proof of GET enrollment summary (Class Schedule - PDF).
  • Provide two references, including name, company, and contact number. One reference must include a current supervisor.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Background check must be satisfactorily completed.
  • Disclosure of any final administrative or judicial decision determining that the applicant has committed sexual harassment within the last seven years (after meeting minimum qualifications and before an offer).

Responsibilities

  • Teach laboratory sections under the supervision of faculty.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the lab coordinator.
  • May be expected to attend the lecture associated with the lab being taught.
  • May be expected to assist the instructor in proctoring exams.
  • Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester.
  • Instruct and manage classroom.
  • Create or implement course design and assignment sequence.
  • Prepare course materials and classroom activities.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance, including giving course grades.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Tutoring students.
